First KC Scholars scholarship recipients enroll at Kansas State University

MANHATTAN — A new scholarship aimed toward residents in the Kansas City area is helping meet financial aid needs this semester for two Kansas State University Global Campus students.
The KC Scholars adult learner scholarship is open to residents with low or modest incomes in Wyandotte and Johnson counties in Kansas, and Cass, Clay, Jackson and Platte counties in Missouri. Applicants must be age 24 or above with at least 12 previously earned college credits to qualify.
The scholarship provides up to $10,000 per year to recipients enrolled full time. As part of the KC Scholars program, Kansas State University will waive its recipients' application fees and will offer an additional $250 scholarship per student per semester.
The scholarship recipients this fall are Caylin Miller, senior in early childhood education, Olathe, and Angelica Bustamante, junior in nutrition and health, Kansas City, Missouri. Both are taking classes online through K-State Global Campus while living and working in the Kansas City area.
KC Scholars is a scholarship and college savings program for young students and adults launched by the Kauffman Foundation. Its mission is to increase the number of residents in the Greater Kansas City area who have earned postsecondary degrees.

"The majority of the new jobs in the United States will require a bachelor's degree; thus, creating a pathway to degree completion for adults who stopped out of college is critical to the economic success of our state and our country. We are pleased to welcome our first students this fall."
Kansas State University became one of the postsecondary institutions in the KC Scholars' Postsecondary Network in 2016, and the program awarded its first scholarships this year.
