Scholarly boost: Office of Undergraduate Research & Creative Inquiry awards spring grants

MANHATTAN — Kansas State University's Office of Undergraduate Research & Creative Inquiry has selected 17 students for research and travel grants for their undergraduate research.
"Undergraduate Research Award grants provide funding for students to work under the guidance of a faculty research mentor," said Anita Cortez, director of the Office of Undergraduate Research & Creative Inquiry. "They get the opportunity to network with other researchers, make contributions to their research field, and present, perform or exhibit their work publicly."
Undergraduate Travel Award grant recipients will be reimbursed for travel cost associated with their research, such as presenting at a conference or conducting research at an archive.
The Office of Undergraduate Research & Creative inquiry is accepting applications for summer research and travel awards. The application deadline is Feb. 15.
The following students have received an Undergraduate Research Award or Travel Award for the spring semester from the Office of Undergraduate Research & Creative Inquiry; included is the name of each student's research mentor:
• Ryan Clark, senior in biological systems engineering, Abilene, received an Undergraduate Research Award and will work with Lisa Wilken, assistant professor of biological and agricultural engineering.
• Lexi Aurand, senior in psychology, Belleville, received an Undergraduate Research Award and will work with Charles Pickens, assistant professor of psychological sciences.
• Madeline Colter, senior in biology, Coldwater, received an Undergraduate Research Award and will work with Ruth Welti, university distinguished professor of biology.
• Stephanie Troyer, senior in music education, Ellinwood, received an Undergraduate Travel Grant and will work with Ruth Gurgel, assistant professor of music education.
• Joy Fesen, senior in nutritional sciences, Hutchinson, received an Undergraduate Research Award and will work with Lucia Garavito, associate professor of modern languages.
• Mollie Bieber, senior in fine arts, Manhattan, received an Undergraduate Travel Grant and will work with Daniel Warner, assistant professor of art.
• Diane Collard, senior in chemical engineering, Olathe, received an Undergraduate Research Award and will work with John Schlup, professor of chemical engineering.
• Margaret Lang, senior in physics, Olathe, received an Undergraduate Research Award and will work with Cydney Alexis, assistant professor of English.
• Brooks Ryan, senior in geology, Olathe, received an Undergraduate Research Award and will work with Saugata Datta, associate professor of geology.
• Charles King-Hagan, senior in modern languages, Overland Park, received an Undergraduate Research Award and will work with Cydney Alexis, assistant professor of English.
• Ryan Luder, senior in physics, Overland Park, received an Undergraduate Research Award and will work with Kristan Corwin, associate professor of physics.
• Caylin Smith, senior in communication studies, Paola, received an Undergraduate Travel Grant and will work with Sarah Riforgiate, assistant professor of communication studies.
• John Thompson, senior in physics, Salina, received an Undergraduate Research Award and will work with Eleanor Sayre, assistant professor of physics.
• Megan Richards, junior in biological systems engineering, Stilwell, received an Undergraduate Research Award and will work with Punit Prakash, assistant professor of electrical and computer engineering.
• Elizabeth Stietzle, senior in animal sciences and industry, Shoreham, New York, received an Undergraduate Travel Award and will work with A. Sally Davis, assistant professor of diagnostic medicine and pathobiology.
• Cora Farley, sophomore in animal sciences and industry, Elizabethtown, Pennsylvania, received an Undergraduate Research Award and will work with Ruth Welti, university distinguished professor of biology.
• Youwei Yang, Baiyin, China, senior in agricultural economics, received an Undergraduate Research Award and will work with Ted Schroeder, university distinguished professor of agricultural economics.
