Undergraduate poster forum highlights engineering research

MANHATTAN — Undergraduate engineering students at Kansas State University have earned honors for their work at the College of Engineering's recent Undergraduate Research Forum.
The event featured 30 poster presentations from eight different engineering departments. In all, 46 students participated. It was sponsored by the Office of Engineering Research and Graduate Programs in the College of Engineering.
Research topics included advanced materials and processes, energy, water and others. Thirty faculty and graduate students were involved in judging the posters, with many stopping by to view the entries.
"We were excited to see the size of our fall poster forums continuing to increase," said Noel Schulz, associate dean of research and graduate programs in the College of Engineering. "In addition to gaining experience in presenting their work in a professional setting, the forum also gives students an opportunity to share their research activities with fellow K-State students and faculty."
Starting with the fall 2015 poster forum event, students had the opportunity to select whether to participate in a category for traditional undergraduate research or a new category for design/build/team/class-projects that fall within the research spectrum. This first semester included five posters in the design/build/team/class-project category. Judging, done by engineering faculty, staff and graduate students, was separate for each category, with first-, second- and third-place winners in each category.
The following Kansas State University engineering students earned honors:
• Tyler Montgomery, senior in biological systems engineering, Almena, $500 first-place award in the design/build/team/class project research category. His research adviser was Edwin Brokesh, instructor of biological and agricultural engineering.
• Lucas Gorentz, senior in mechanical engineering, Arma, tied for the $300 second-place award in undergraduate research. His research adviser was Warren White, professor of mechanical and nuclear engineering.
• Laura Wilson, senior in biological systems engineering, Clyde, $300 second-place award in the design/build/team/class project research category. Her research adviser was Edwin Brokesh, instructor of biological and agricultural engineering.
• Kelsey Harlow, senior in mechanical engineering, Colwich, $100 third-place award in undergraduate research. Her research adviser was Gurpreet Singh, associate professor of mechanical and nuclear engineering.
• Ryan Strasser, senior in biological systems engineering, Garden City, $500 first-place award in the design/build/team/class project research category. His research adviser was Edwin Brokesh, instructor of biological and agricultural engineering.
• Erica Schmitz, senior in biological systems engineering, Hiawatha, $300 second-place award in the design/build/team/class project research category. Her research adviser was Edwin Brokesh, instructor of biological and agricultural engineering.
