Submitted by Gabriela Diaz de Sabates

The campus community is invited to a lecture and discussion by Coral Herrera Gómez, which will be presented today. Sponsored by the women's studies department, Gómez will be discussing sociocultural constructions of love and gender. At 9:30 a.m. in 1 Leasure Hall, she will present "Sexuality and social construction of gender," and at 2:30 p.m. in the 113 Leadership Studies Building, she will discuss "Sociocultural construction of reality, gender and love."

Gómez has a doctorate in humanities from the prestigious University Carlos III in Madrid, Spain. Her research specialization is in gender theory and audiovisual communication. Gómez has published books on the topics of gender and sexual identity, such as "La Construcción Sociocultural del Amor Romántico" — which translates to "Sociocultural Construction of Romantic Love," "Bodas Diversas y Amores Queer" — which translates to "Diverse Weddings and Queer Loves," and "Más Allá de las Etiquetas" — which translates to "Beyond Labels." She also is a public communicator whose articles have been published by Costa Rican newspapers, CIEM and the renowned Spanish newspaper "El País." Gómez offers students an international perspective on issues of gender construction as well as an example of how to make a career as a consultant and activist. She is the creator of the blog Akita
