Professional development symposium focuses on military-connected students

Submitted by Patrice Scott

The College of Education is hosting the K-State Military Education and Family Initiatives Symposium for educators, child-youth specialists, counselors, school administrators and student services, and military-connected personnel from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. March 11 at Fort Riley's Conference Center.

The symposium's program includes topics such as college and career ready standards, training school counselors, the impact of multiple combat tours on learning, transitioning from soldier to student, financial behaviors of military members, and the impact of trauma and post-traumatic stress disorder, or PTSD, on spouses and families will be discussed. The event costs $15 and includes lunch. RSVP by March 4.

Sandy Risberg, educator, military spouse and event organizer, said this conference-style event will focus on local school and community partners and the issues related to better serving all military-connected students, including children of military families, veterans and military spouses.

"The commitment to education and the military is blended in this dissemination of works, information and resources,” Risberg said. “This professional development symposium promises to be a day with something for everyone serving the military population.”
