Submitted by Jane P. Marshall

Deb Canter and Mary Meck Higgins have been named fellows of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.

The status of fellow recognizes their distinguished contributions to the dietetics profession and in optimizing the nation's health through food and nutrition.

Canter is professor and director of the didactic program in dietetics in the hospitality management and dietetics department.

The Carnegie Foundation and the Council for the Advancement and Support of Education named her Professor of the Year for Kansas in 1991. She received the Medallion from the American Dietetic Association — now the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics — in 2002 for her leadership and contributions to the profession and the association. In 2012, she was invited to be the prestigious Lenna Frances Cooper Memorial Lecturer for the Food and Nutrition Conference and Exhibition.

She has published in several journals, such as the Journal of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, Journal of Hospitality and Tourism Research, and Topics in Clinical Nutrition.

Higgins is an associate professor in the human nutrition department and a K-State Research and Extension specialist.

She has received the College of Human Ecology's Dawley-Scholer Award for faculty excellence in student development, the extension service's Team Award for an adult development and aging program, the national Jeanne M. Priester Award for "A Vision for the Future: Food Assistance for Senior Adults" and the College of Human Ecology Faculty Extension Excellence Award.

Higgins has published in such journals as Nutrients, Journal of Environmental Health and Journal of Nutrition for the Elderly.
