Give your old stuff a new life through Give It Up for Good

Submitted by Communications and Marketing

Don’t throw out that retro dining room chair. Somebody else may want it as much as you want their pair of barely-worn shoes.

That’s why the United Way of Riley County and K-State Student United Way are asking you and your neighbors to Give It Up for Good. It’s a program to keep your unwanted stuff out of the trash bin and put it in the hands of someone who can use it.  And you can look for your own treasure in what your neighbors donate.

Step one is to volunteer. You can help out from May 9-12 by registering at unitedwayrc.org.

Step two is to donate. Give up your unwanted furniture, appliances, lamps, clothing, shoes, nonperishable food items, toys and school supplies like pens, pencils and backpacks.

From May 9-11 come by the National Guard Armory, 721 Levee Drive, between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. or schedule a free pick-up.

Other drop sites, available from May 9-11, are:

  • The Haymaker/Moore Hall lawn along Claflin Avenue, between Goodnow Hall and Kramer Dining Center, from noon to 5 p.m.
  • Frith Community Center on Tunstall Circle at the Jardine Apartments, from noon to 5 p.m.
  • Lobbies of Boyd, Putnam and Van Zile halls, all day

Students moving out of the residence halls after 5 p.m. May 11 will find drop sites in their hall's lobby.

Step three is to shop. On Saturday, May 12, come to the armory from 7:30 to 9 a.m. at the early bird rate of $5. Admission is free from 9 a.m. to noon.

Donated items also will benefit community organizations like the Flint Hills Breadbasket and the Manhattan Emergency Shelter.

Whether you’re a student needing a study break from finals or just someone who wants to get involved in the community, try to Give It Up for Good. For more information, go to unitedwayrc.org.
