Online course offers students a healthful opportunity

Submitted by Rosanna Vail

Stress, sickness and subpar eating habits can be common problems for college students. When it comes to pursuing higher education away from home, knowledge and practice of a healthy lifestyle can become secondary to cramming for exams and extracurricular activities.

But a class being offered through the Division of Continuing Education can help students remedy that pattern over the span of eight weeks. The course is called Healthful and Safe College Life, EDCEP 103.

The online course, with an upcoming session beginning Oct. 15, can be applied to the K-State 8 or University General Education requirements. The class will focus on relevant health topics such as sexual health, nutrition and fitness, illness prevention and more.

“The Healthful and Safe College Life course has been developed as a comprehensive health course that addresses pertinent health topics that impact college students. Students also explore the effect of lifestyle choices on academic achievement,” said Rosemary Boggs, program coordinator at the Division of Continuing Education.

One topic, called mental health, will provide information on stress reduction and depression, which can be concerns for incoming and upper-class students alike. Nutrition and fitness experts will give examples of guilt-free healthy food choices while teaching about weight management and fitness.

Since the three-credit class is designed to be entirely completed online, it is very flexible and convenient for students. The class is offered five times during the 2012-2013 school year. Along with the upcoming Oct. 15 session, remaining sessions start Jan. 22, March 18 and June 10, 2013.
