The DASSA’s Peer Mentoring program: Pitstop aims to cultivate meaningful connections among students and to foster a sense of belonging through the development of critical thinking and communication skills. This initiative focuses on developing educational and practical competencies, with the overarching goal of enhancing students' academic preparedness, career readiness, and mental well-being.

Pitstop connects students with experienced mentors ready to share their knowledge and guide them through their K-State journey. For first-year or new students, having a peer mentor offers support in navigating classes, campus life, and more. Second-year or beyond students can valuable become mentors, making a positive impact on another student’s K-State experience while honing their own leadership skills.

Program Goals

  • Cultivate a sense of belonging and community for students new to campus.
  • Strengthen informal communication and establish a social support network on campus.
  • Generate excitement about K-State and ease the transition to college life.
  • Alleviate concerns and offer campus navigation resources for first year and new students.
  • Facilitate timely, in-person connections.

Mentor-Mentee Discussions

Mentors and mentees engage in valuable discussions that enhance the college experience, focusing on:

  • Building connections with peers, faculty, and staff.
  • Exploring opportunities for campus involvement.
  • Navigating academic expectations at the university level.
  • Creating comprehensive plans for academic, social, and career success.
  • Balancing the demands of university life with personal responsibilities and social activities.

Program Expectations

Mentees are encouraged to have at least 1 interaction with their Peer Mentors per week, whether by text, email, video call, attending a group discussion in person or GroupMe or a face-to-face one-on-one meeting, depending on individual preferences.
