DAS 115 Orientation to Health Careers

(Fall only) - 1 Credit Hour

Acquaints students whose career goals are in the health professions with the variety of options available and with the corresponding academic requirements. Discussion covers an introduction to the personal responsibilities that health-care workers assume and the impact of social and economic problems on our health-care delivery system. Includes an orientation to general requirements for success as a student at K-State and in professional health related programs.

Target Audience: Students considering Healthcare pathways and students enrolled in the Integrated Health Studies (IHS) Secondary Major.

 

DAS 240 Practicum in Pre-Health

1 Credit Hour

Forty hours spent observing a designated practice of the student’s choice (dentistry, medicine, physician assistant, optometry, etc.). Students are under the supervision and direction of practitioners in the field and complete coursework to reflect on their shadowing experience.

Target Audience: Students who wish to earn credit for their shadowing experiences and students enrolled in the IHS Secondary Major.

 

DAS 315 Creating a Competitive Health Professional School Application

(Spring only) - 1 Credit Hour

Assist in drafting a personal statement, obtaining letters of recommendation, preparing for the interview process, learning about the Centralized Application Services, as well as other preparation needed for their respective entrance examination. Addresses current trends and topics in health care such as interprofessional education, health care disparities, and cultural competence.

Target Audience: Students who are preparing to apply to health professional schools in the coming year and students enrolled in the IHS Secondary Major.
