Human Development and Family Science
Human Development and Family Science bachelor's degree
The human development and family science program at K-State focuses on caring for individual needs across a lifespan in a family context.
This interdisciplinary program offers a broad range of coursework and experiences allowing students to examine important issues including development across the life cycle, factors that enhance or impede the development of healthy relationships, interactions with the larger culture and many others.

The K-State difference
K-State's HDFS graduates are in high demand and find careers that take them all around the world. Because the coursework is broad and interdisciplinary, students also are extremely prepared for graduate and professional school options.
Graduates who have completed all of the degree requirements and the mandatory internship are qualified to apply for the Provisional Certified Family Life Education, or CFLE, designation, which is administered by the National Council on Family Relations.

What courses will I take in the human development and family science program?
Students must complete 120 credit hours to graduate. A sample of professional courses includes:
- Family Relationships and Gender Roles
- Introduction to Human Sexuality
- Personal Financial Planning
- Families and Diversity
- Working with Parents
Students may choose either an area of concentration or complete an internship. The internship option includes a series of senior-year courses that apply course content to the reality of working in the field. Students who choose the non-internship option identify an area of concentration in which they will take at least nine credit hours. Examples of possible concentrations include psychology, sociology, gerontology or social work.
