Opportunities for M.S. and Ph.D. graduates
Career opportunities
Graduate study in biochemistry provides training for a number of varied academic and technological careers. Due to the breadth of the field of biochemistry, which directly involves or can impinge on an array of basic and applied problems, opportunities in biochemistry are expanding, and this expansion is expected to continue. Doctoral and postdoctoral graduates find academic positions not only in departments of biochemistry, biophysics, and molecular biology but also in departments of biology, chemistry, pharmacology, physiology, medicinal chemistry, nutrition, and medicine. Doctoral graduates find positions requiring independent work in a wide range of industries such as biotechnological, chemical, pharmacological, biomedical, and food technology. Master's graduates generally occupy skilled technical positions in industry, government, or academic research laboratories, and many continue with doctoral training. Additional careers include government regulatory, management, journalism, sales, and, with further education, medicine and law.
Postdoctoral opportunities
Postdoctoral positions are arranged between the postdoctoral applicant and the prospective mentor, generally in response to advertised positions. The same vigorous research atmosphere and interactive environment that contribute to the development of graduate students make Kansas State University an ideal place for postdoctoral training in biochemistry. If you are interested in postdoctoral training under the research program of a particular faculty member, please contact the faculty member directly to discuss postdoctoral opportunities.
