Using calendar filters

The calendar system, Localist, has built in filtering that we have leveraged to help our units display and define their events. As a calendar user, you can use these to build calendar components or digests.

Types of filters

The core filter for any event is the Department. The department defines which campus or university group owns the event. A single event can have multiple departments listed to provide greater audience reach.

Calendar admins have access to a Request event button. If you find an event that you would like to have added to a calendar in your control, you can use this button to send a request to have the event added to your calendar. It will show on the requested calendar within 24 hours.

Sub-filters

Sub-filters can help users find events they are interested in. they can also help calendar admins and web editors filter events into event sub-pages.

  • Event types: Should be used to convey the format of the event. For example, KSRE Local is used for all local KSRE events to collect each into a group.
  • Topics: Provides context for the content that will be provided or covered at the event.
  • Audience: Defines who the event is geared toward.
  • Tags: Tags are created in a free-text field and are not selected from a pre-determined list.
    • Tags are displayed on the Event Details Page below your Filters.
    • Tags allow grouping with a like identifier that doesn’t warrant an entire unique Filter. For example, if your organization has a Filter called "Holidays & Celebrations" and you're adding a Halloween Gala, the event could be tagged with "Halloween", "Halloween Gala," etc.
  • Keywords: Keywords are effectively hidden tags as they are only used for internal purposes. They are not displayed anywhere on the calendar.
    • SEO & Misspellings: If any detail of an event, such as a speaker’s name or the location, have common misspellings or other monikers, noting them as a Keyword will ensure that the most possible queries will pull the event in Localist.
    • Widget & Channel Filtering: Keywords (and Tags) are available as a filtering parameter for Widgets and Channels. Since Keywords are hidden, they are commonly used for admins to mark specific events for a Widget/Channel. For example, "HomepageWidget," "AthleticsChannel," or "PartnerWidget."

Applying filters to components or digests

In the Events - standard level component, web editors can adjust which events show by changing the Content must match option. This option will default to At least one place, group, keyword or tag, and one filter item. Of the options, you can filter for the group, keyword or tag, and the filter items within the event component.

  • The group matches the department or group assigned in the event.
  • The keywords and tags are free text that can be added to any event. If it doesn't appear to be working, check that the spelling matches exactly.
  • The filter items are the event types, topics and audience.

You can select from one of the options below. Pay attention to how the filters are combined.

  • At least one Place, Group, Keyword or Tag, and one Filter item
  • Any Place, Group, Keyword, Tag, or Filter item
  • At least one Place and Group, and all Keywords, Tags, and Filter items
  • Any place or Group, and at least one Keyword or Tag, and one Filter item
