Career Specialist

Job Description

The Career Center facilitates the career readiness of all students throughout the K-State community. Career Specialists are K-State students trained to work in a peer educator/mentor role to assist others in the career planning process. Career Specialists guide college students through career assessments, resume and cover letter creation, and assist them in connecting career goals with academic programs at K-State.

This team directly serves more than 1,000 K-State students annually and delivers a crucial service to the University community which supports both student retention and recruitment. It is for this reason Career Specialists must have strong helping and communication skills.

Career Specialists also facilitate Academic/Career Decisions (EDCEP 120), a 1-credit hour career planning class. In addition, Career Specialists are responsible for coordinating and administering Career Center programs and activities including outreach presentations as well as other career events.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Undergraduate student with a minimum of 24 credit hours completed by May 2024
  • Satisfactory academic standing with a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.75
  • Willingness to participate in a training program in spring 2024
  • Evidence of teamwork and communication skills
  • Willingness to facilitate career-planning classes
  • Time commitment of at least 10 hours per week beginning fall 2024
  • Desire to make this a productive personal, career development and employment experience

Training Overview & Additional Details

A. Spring 2024

A 6-session training program includes:

  • Communication/Helping Skills Development
  • Career Development Theory/Career Assessments
  • Public Speaking/Leadership Development
  • Decision-Making Theory
  • Online Career Resources
  • Office Operations

B. Fall 2024 and Beyond

On the job training:

  • Mentor/mentee "shadow" program
  • Continued study of academic programs
  • Weekly staff meetings

Hourly Wage: $9.00
