Six Steps for Career Fair Success
September 18, 2024 - The All-University Career Fair is a three-day, multi-industry career fair that gives you the chance to engage with companies and organizations hiring for full-time and part-time jobs, internships, and co-ops. All students and alumni are invited to attend, regardless of major or graduation year.
With record employer attendance, this is a great opportunity to connect with recruiters, learn about various industries, and make a lasting impression. To maximize the benefits of this event, preparation is key. Here’s a comprehensive guide to help you get ready for the All-University Career Fair and make the most of the experience.
1. Perfect your Resume
Your resume is a one-page document that highlights your relevant professional skills and experiences. Refer to the Career Center’s Resume and Interview Guide for tips and guidelines on building an effective resume. Visit the Career Center for further assistance with tailoring your resume for this event. Bring several printed copies of your resumes to hand to recruiters when you speak with them.
- For a quick resume critique, schedule an appointment for a Resume Tune-Up prior to the career fair to meet with an advisor. Please note Tune-Ups are NOT available on the day of the career fair.
- For a drop-in resume critique, visit The Studio on the second floor of the Career Center. The Studio is open from 8:00am-5:00pm Monday-Friday and will be open throughout the career fair.
- For a more in-depth resume review, schedule an appointment with your Career Center advisor through Handshake.
2. Prepare your Attire
Dress to impress! Business casual attire is appropriate for K-State career fairs. Business casual may include slacks, skirts, or khakis with a dress shirt. A tie is recommended for a professional appearance. Ensure your outfit is comfortable for traversing through Bramlage - comfortable, closed-toe shoes are advisable. Accessories should be kept to a minimum. Business professional attire is also commonly worn to career events.
Check out the Career Closet for free business professional attire from a wide selection of clothing that has been donated by the K-State community. The Career Closet is open to all K-State students, 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m., Monday-Friday - no appointment needed!
3. Plan your Day
- Research companies prior to your visit: Use Handshake to find out which companies and organizations will be attending. Identify a few companies you are interested in speaking to, and review their websites, job postings, and recent news.
- Map it out: Review the career fair layout and employer booth numbers in Handshake. You will also receive a booklet with a map and booth numbers when you arrive at the career fair. Plan your route to ensure you can visit the companies you are interested in.
- Schedule breaks: Career fairs can be overwhelming, so plan short breaks to stay refreshed and focused. A well-rested approach will help you engage more effectively with recruiters. The Career Center will have a Student Lounge available in the Shamrock Zone, where you can take breaks and regain your energy!
4. Practice Good Networking Etiquette
- Craft your elevator pitch: An elevator pitch is a quick 30 second summary of your background and career interests, including your name, major, education, training, and strengths. A good elevator pitch emphasizes what you can do for the employer, rather than what the employer can do for you. Practice your pitch until you can deliver it naturally and confidently!
- Be respectful and professional: Approach recruiters with a friendly demeanor and be respectful of their time. Listen actively and engage in meaningful conversations. Most importantly, be your authentic self!
- Ask meaningful questions: Show your interest and initiative by preparing questions about the company’s culture, team structure, and career development opportunities. This demonstrates that you’ve done your homework and are genuinely interested in their organization.
5. Stay Positive and Open-Minded
While you may have specific companies or roles in mind, be open to exploring unexpected opportunities. Career fairs can introduce you to roles or companies you hadn’t considered!
6. Reflect and Follow Up
After the fair, take some time to reflect on your interactions and experiences. Note any insights or follow-up actions you need to take, such as scheduling an interview or sending a thank-you email.
