Associate or Full Professor

The Department of Diagnostic Medicine/Pathobiology in the College of Veterinary Medicine at Kansas State University seeks applications for a 12-month, tenure-track or tenured Associate Professor/ Full Professor Faculty position with a primary emphasis in basic, mechanistic research on emerging and/or zoonotic bacterial or viral pathogens. This position will also serve as the Associate Director of an NIH COBRE Center (Center for Emerging and Zoonotic Infectious Diseases; https://www.k-state.edu/cezid). The expected start date for this position is as early as January 2023. The successful applicant must have extensive experience leading a productive research program as demonstrated by: (i) longstanding support from NIAID, NIGMS or similar funding programs; (ii) a robust record of training graduate students, post-doctoral fellows and junior faculty; and (iii) high-impact peer-reviewed publications. Preference will be given to applicants that utilize animal models in their research and that focus on emerging and/or zoonotic infectious diseases. The distribution of effort for this position is approximately 60-70 % research, 10-20% administration, 5-10 % graduate teaching, and 5-10 % non-directed service. Assistant Professor, Zoonotic Viral Diseases, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, University of Calgary

Faculty position “Zoonotic Viral Diseases”
The Faculty of Veterinary Medicine (UCVM) at the University of Calgary invites applications for a full-time Academic position in Zoonotic Viral Diseases. The successful candidate will be appointed at the rank of Assistant Professor (tenure track). The anticipated start date is July 1, 2024, or an earlier mutually agreed upon date.

Position Description and Associated Responsibilities
The selected applicant will be an emerging leader in the area of Zoonotic Viral Diseases, epidemic/pandemic viruses that can cause a permanent threat to human and animal health. The selected applicant will have extensive expertise in infection pathogenesis, prevention and control, including, but not limited to, cutting-edge vaccine development, therapeutic drug discovery, sensitive diagnostic tools, environmental monitoring strategies, or evolution of emerging viruses at the human-animal interface. The selected applicant is expected to establish an externally funded research program that is transdisciplinary and potentially complementary and collaborative with current strengths in infection biology research at the faculties of Veterinary Medicine, Medicine (CSM), Science and Engineering (SSE). There are cutting-edge core facilities in place, including for research with small and large animal models, and a newly renovated Containment Level 3 facility. In addition to fostering a thriving training program, the selected candidate will participate in undergraduate, DVM program and graduate level teaching.

Position Requirements

• PhD and possible DVM or equivalent
• Postdoctoral research experiences in infectious disease/viral disease research
• Demonstrated track record of publications and the potential to obtain external funding

The selected applicant will join the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, with the possibility for adjunct appointments at other Faculties. The research environment is multi-disciplinary and prioritizes transdisciplinary research initiatives. The selected applicant needs to demonstrate an ability and willingness to build connections with investigators across UCVM and the University of Calgary in such initiatives. Experience with lecturing and innovative educational approaches, course development and coordination, and a demonstrated record of impact in undergraduate and graduate teaching will be an asset. The selected applicant will also have opportunities to be involved in administrative and service activities that affect the UCVM community.

Information about the faculty
UCVM is a highly research active faculty with currently seven organized research groups, which includes the Infection Biology Research Group. UCVM is consistently ranked among the Top 40 international veterinary schools, with an increasing sponsored research funding. Currently, UCVM is home to 11 research chairs, four of them Canada Research Chairs. UCVM has approximately 80 faculty members, 150 staff, 150 graduate students, 35 post-doctoral fellows, and 15 advanced clinical trainees. UCVM’s DVM program provides a comprehensive general veterinary education to 50 students per year, currently expanding to 100 students.
