FAQ

1. Application window: October 1 – February 8

Only for PhD (not MS) and only for Fall admission (not Spring).

November 28: For full consideration for the Timothy R. Donoghue Graduate Scholarship ($5,000/year add-on for 1 or 2 years) from the Graduate School.

January 2: For full consideration of international applications (Recommendation letters should be received by January 8).

February 8: For full consideration of domestic applications & for additional consideration of international applications.

2. Financial support

Our graduate students are supported as either graduate teaching assistants (GTAs) or graduate research assistants (GRAs).

3. GRE

GRE is not required, but your GRE scores may make your application stronger. During the application process you can skip the GRE section by typing the word WAIVE in the box titled 'Admin Only', shown just below the GRE score entries. This should allow you to proceed without submitting the GRE.

4. English proficiency for International Students (except those from countries listed here)

For international students, please be sure that you satisfy the following English proficiency requirements of our program as well as that of the Graduate School (≥ 80 for TOEFL (MyBest); ≥ 6.5 for IELTS): For TOEFL (MyBest), listening/writing/reading ≥ 20 and speaking ≥ 22; For IELTS, listening/writing/reading ≥ 6.5 and speaking ≥ 7 (We may consider very strong international applicants whose speaking score is a little lower (i.e., the scores of all the four categories are ≥ 20 (TOEFL (MyBest) or ≥ 6.5 (IELTS).). The requirement of the higher speak score will waive a Speak test that is requested by Kansas Board of Regents. We strongly encourage you to retake the TOEFL or IELTS if your score(s) are below the requirement.

5. Research group

You are encouraged to contact a professor, but this does not mean you must work with the professor. You will have a chance to meet and discuss with several professors in the first semester, and will officially start working with your major professor in late November.

6. Affidavit of financial support for international applicants

You do not need to provide the affidavit for application to our PhD program.

7. Spring admission

We do not accept applications for spring enrollment.

8. MS application

We only accept applications for PhD, not MS. Of note, domestic students typically enter directly after the BS; international students may enter after receiving a BS or MS depending on what is most common for their countries.
