1.1. Animal Welfare Act (7 U.S.C. Sections 2131-2159) and USDA implementing regulations (9 CFR 1-3) as amended.

1.2. PHS Policy on Humane Care & Use of Laboratory Animals. Revised 2015.

2. Purpose/Scope: The Public Health Service Policy on the Humane Care and Use of Laboratory Animals (PHS Policy) and the USDA Animal Welfare Regulations require appropriate documentation and veterinary oversight of all animals used in research, teaching and testing. This includes adequate justification to the IACUC for the specific species and number of animals requested for use. In order to meet this required oversight, Kansas State University is implementing the following policy guideline.

3. Prior to the acquisition or procurement of any vertebrate animal intended to be used for research, teaching or testing, the Principle Investigator (PI) must first either have:

3.1. An IACUC approved protocol for the type (species, breed, strain, stock, sex, age, weight, etc.) and number of animals specified and authorized in the IACUC approved protocol; or

3.2. Attending veterinarian (AV) approval to acquire/purchase the animals and temporarily assign them to another IACUC approved animal holding protocol (i.e., CMG Animal Holding Protocol) pending IACUC approval of the PI’s protocol.

4. Questions or concerns about the procurement of vertebrate animals should be directed to either:

  • The Comparative Medicine Group (CMG) – 532-5640
  • The University Research Compliance Office (URCO) – 532-3224
