Adding a CIP Code to a New Major, Minor, Certificate

  • New Major, Minor, Certificate is done via the Curriculum Submission Process via Curriculog

ALL approved CIP Code changes will be reported to KBOR once final approvals and processes are completed!!

Request to Change CIP Code

  • Request to Change a Code from a non-STEM to STEM designated code
  • Request to Change a Code from a non-STEM to a different non-STEM code

The following procedure must be followed to request a change to an existing program’s CIP code:

  1. A department wishing to change the CIP code of its major(s) should complete the CIP Code Change/Request Form and attach any supporting documentation.
  2. A designee from the Office of the Provost will consult with the Office of the Registrar and the Office of Institutional Research in reviewing the request. If that review results in a consensus that the change is warranted, the change can be approved for implementation in the Fall of the next academic year.
  3. These offices may also consult with International Student and Scholar Services, and Financial Aid before determining if the CIP code change will be approved.
  4. Decisions made through this process are final. Additional requests to change a CIP code for a major will only be considered if there are documented changes to the curriculum.

Add to DHS STEM Designation List

The following procedure must be followed to request that K-State submit a request for addition to the DHS STEM designation list:

    • Title and six-digit code of the CIP code being nominated.
    • The name, email address and telephone number of the nominator; if submitted on behalf of an educational institution or other institutional entity, please indicate the appropriate contact person at the institution.
    • If nominating a CIP code for inclusion, a description of how the field of study under this CIP code engages students in research, innovation or development of new technologies using engineering, mathematics, computer science or natural sciences (including physical, biological and agricultural sciences).
    • If nominating a CIP code for removal, a description of how the field of study under this CIP code does not engage students in research, innovation or development of new technologies using engineering, mathematics, computer science or natural sciences (including physical, biological and agricultural sciences).
  1. Submit CIP Code Change/Request Form and attach the additional information required by the Department of Homeland Security Above.
  2. Submissions are due no later than June 30th to ensure K-State has enough time to review all documentation, determine if additional information is required or needed and if support for a submission for DHS is appropriate.
  3. All requests/submissions will be reviewed and any determined to be eligible will be submitted as a bulk request from K-State Administration.
    • Keep in mind this is a Nominiation submission to the Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP) within the Department of Homaland Security.
    • All submissions are due by August 1st with anticipated changes to the DHS STEM Designated Degree Program List for the next year. The program will announce any changes to the list via a Federal Register Notice and through its communication channels, including Broadcast Messages, Study in the States blog posts and social media.
