Regulating Federal Elections: How Far Can the States Go?

The College of Educationa's Center for Social Studies Education is hosting a live webinar with constitutional scholars to address three of the mostly hotly debated voting rights/election issues in American today.

Ben Mooneyham is an attorney at GM Law PC in Kansas City, Missouri. He specializes in complex civil litigation, with experience in intellectual property, commcercial and contract disputes, and tort defenses, among other areas, and he has worked on matters in courts across the country. Ben earned his B.A. in Economics and Philosophy from K-State in December 2008 and a law degree from The University of Chicago Law School in June 2012. After law school, Ben served as a staff law clerk at the United States Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit and later worked at Reed Smith LLP in Chicago before moving to Kansas City.

Constitution Day Legal Speaker: Prof. Lumen Mulligan on the Constitutional Right to Privacy

Each year, the Pre-Law program hosts a Constitution Day event to reach out to the campus and community to discuss an important legal topic. This year’s Constitution Day Legal Speaker will be Professor Lumen Mulligan, the Earl B. Schurtz Research Professor of Law at the University of Kansas School of Law. Professor Mulligan and Tracey Lee, Business Law Instructor & former Pre-Law Advisor, will host an informational discussion about the Kansas Constitutional right to privacy, including reproductive rights. The conversation will focus on two constitutional analyses: the recent U.S. Supreme Court decision, Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization (2022), and the Kansas Supreme Court decision, Hodes & Nauser v. Schmidt (2019). Attendees of this Legal Speaker event will better understand the protections under Section 1 of the Kansas Constitution Bill of Rights, and how the Kansas Supreme Court’s analysis differs from that of the U.S. Supreme Court interpreting the Fourteenth Amendment.

This networking event is intended to bring law programs and students together to facilitate connections for students interested in applying to law school. The meet-up is will include 25 law programs with an emphasis on including regional schools.
Law school programs attending this event will be assigned a high-top table where they can place information about their program. Students attending the event are encouraged to move around the room to visit with programs. Light refreshments will be available for students and programs in attendance.

Legal Speaker Series: Zachary Sheppard and Summer Dierks

Join us for a Legal Speaker Series! We will be hosting two attorneys that both practice here in Manhattan, Summer Dierks and Zachary Sheppard. Summer is a general practice attorney with an emphasis in family law, estate planning, contract law, property law, and agricultural law. Zachary is a transactional attorney who deals mostly with reality law and title work.

Summer Dierks was born in Kiowa, Kansas. She was raised in Coffeyville, Kansas and attended Kansas State University from 2002-2005 obtaining a Bachelor’s degree in Agricultural Communications and Journalism. Before attending law school, Summer worked at the Kansas State University Foundation fundraising for the College of Agriculture from 2005-2007. She then worked at the Manhattan Convention and Visitors Bureau as the Convention Sales Manager until 2010. During law school, Summer clerked for the Honorable Steve Leben, Judge at the Kansas Court of Appeals as well as the Kansas Attorney General, Criminal Litigation Division. She was also licensed to practice law as a student in the Washburn University Law Clinic. She was awarded her Juris Doctor in 2012 from Washburn University School of Law and was the 2016 recipient of the Kansas Bar Association Pro Bono Award. Summer started practicing law in Manhattan in 2012 and was previously a partner at Seaton, Seaton & Dierks, LLP. She started her own firm, Dierks Law Firm, in June 2021.
Zachary Sheppard is an attorney at Charlson & Wilson Bonded Abstracters Inc. in Manhattan. He grew up in agriculture just north of Manhattan and graduated from Kansas State University in 2014 with a degree in mass communications. After K-State, he attended the University of Kansas School of Law, graduating in December 2016. In law school, he interned at Charlson & Wilson Bonded Abstracters and the Kansas Department of Agriculture, and he clerked for Judge Meryl Wilson of the Riley County District Court. He currently lives in Wamego with his wife, daughter, and their 9-year-old basset hound.

Legal Speaker Series: Kevin Keatley

Join us for a legal speaker related to prosecution. This is an excellent opportunity to hear from and ask questions to a prosecuting attorney, so be sure to take advantage of it!

Kevin Keatley is a Deputy District Attorney in the Shawnee County District Attorney's Office. He has been a prosecutor there since 2011. His primary duties at the District Attorney's Office include review of the more than 5000 case referrals for prosecution each year, presenting cases to the grand jury, training law enforcement, and providing prosecution coverage in both misdemeanor and felony divisions. He has worked closely with local bonding companies and the fugitive warrants unit in the Shawnee County Sheriff's Office to provide more timely information in getting fugitives back to court. Kevin is an active member in the Sam A Crow Inn of Courts, currently serving as the CLE Chair. He is also a member and former presenter with the Kansas County and District Attorney Association. Kevin is an adjunct professor in the Communication Studies Department at Kansas State. Kevin graduated from Kansas State University in 2008 with a Bachelor's Degree in Political Science and Washburn University in 2011 with his Juris doctorate. In his free time, Kevin enjoys coaching his kids' sports teams, bowling, and is learning how to golf.

Covered topics include causation in the LSAT, standard argument forms, sample problems from the reasoning section, and more presented by Dr. Bruce Glymour, Dr. Shay Logan, and Dr. Graham Leach-Krouse.

Have you ever wondered what a law school class is like? Join us for an interactive appellate argument class taught by KU Law Professor Lumen Mulligan over the topic of "This Year’s Big Supreme Court Cases".

Professor Mulligan joined the KU Law faculty in 2010. He teaches predominantly civil litigation courses. KU Law students have recognized Mulligan for his excellent teaching several times. Mulligan also teaches undergraduate classes in the KU Honors Program and directs the K-State to KU Law LEAD Program.

In past semesters, we have hosted similar events with Professor Mulligan. Junior Aria Knedler says, "It was an interesting way to see what a future law class might look like! It taught me about some constitutional precedents as well as skills you need as a lawyer. I definitely plan on going again this year!" This semester, Prof. Mulligan will be returning to bring the law school classroom experience to our campus!

Legal Speaker Series: Intro to Indian and Environmental Law with Dean Elizabeth Kronk Warner

This Legal Speaker Series event will feature Dean Elizabeth Kronk Warner, who will provide an overview of the intersection of Indian Law and Environmental Law. If you read the K-State First Book, The Marrow Thieves, this event will provide a legal perspective on themes applicable to the book. Knowledge of the book is not a prerequisite—simply an overlap.

Elizabeth Kronk Warner is Dean and Professor of Law at the S.J. Quinney College of Law at the University of Utah. She was formerly Associate Dean and Professor of Law at the University of Kansas School of Law (KU), where she was also the Director of the Tribal Law and Government Center.

Dean Kronk Warner is a nationally recognized expert in the intersection of Environmental and Indian law. She has taught courses in Property, Indian, Environmental and Natural Resources Law, and supervised the KU Tribal Judicial Support Clinic. She has received several teaching excellence awards, co-authored several books on environmental issues and Native Americans, and has over 40 articles and book chapters to her credit. Dean Kronk Warner, a citizen of the Sault Ste. Marie Tribe of Chippewa Indians, served as an appellate judge for the tribe and as a district judge for the Prairie Band Potawatomi Tribe.

Dean Kronk Warner previously was an active member of the Federal Bar Association, serving on its national Board of Directors. In 2014, she received the Federal Bar Association President’s Award for leadership and extraordinary service, commitment, and guidance to the Federal Bar Association and its members. She is currently active in the American Bar Association, where she is co-chaired of the Native American Resources Committee. She holds a J.D. from the University of Michigan, a B.S. from Cornell University, and also studied at Nanyang Technological University in Singapore.

In the past, Pre-Law students have cited this as one of the most important events for learning what law schools can offer students in terms of classes, clinics, journals, internships, and job placement. Even if you aren’t set on Washburn, there’s lots to learn from current law students and professors—it’s a great opportunity to get helpful tips and to “demystify” the law student experience.

The Office of Pre-Law Advising and K-State’s Chapter of Mortar Board will co-host the next Legal Speaker with Mohammed Hill at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 9, via Zoom. Hill earned his Bachelor of Arts from the University of California, Berkeley (where he served as VP of his Mortar Board chapter), and his Juris Doctor from the University of Virginia School of Law.

Hill has practiced law as an in-house commercial transactional attorney for the last several years, including for Zoom. Hill is currently product counsel for Visa and on Mortar Board's National Leadership Counsel as an alumni representative. Hill will discuss complex technology agreements and legal issues surrounding software licensing and digital content management.

Get help with your personal statement for law school applications at our Personal Statement Workshop! Jim Hohenbary, director of Nationally Competitive Scholarships, will guide you through exercises to help you make the most of your two pages by developing your ideas and cultivating your story. Jim will specifically address how to talk about your Covid experience.

No preparation is required to attend this workshop. You are welcome to bring a draft of your personal statement. If you don’t have a draft, bring a list of your experiences or anecdotes about how your legal goals have evolved. The goal of this session is to provide you the tools to improve or complete your draft.

About the Presenter:

Jim Hohenbary earned a BA in English Literature from Truman State University and an MA in English Literature at Kansas State University, both with an emphasis in Creative Writing. He continues to write when time permits, and his first novel, Before the Ruins, was published in the fall of 2019.

He started his career at K-State as an Open Option advisor before moving into a scholarship advising role in 2000. He is also, currently, the Associate Director of the University Honors Program.

In each of these roles, Jim has enjoyed helping students refine their goals for the future and find meaningful ways to enhance their college experiences, both inside and outside the classroom.

Legal Speaker Series: Voting Rights

Join K-State Pre-Law and Nonprofit Leadership to host a Legal Speaker to discuss voting law. Davis Hammet, the President and Founder of Loud Light, an organization committed to increasing voter turnout, will discuss voting rights and the law.

Davis Hammet graduated from Florida State University with a B.S. in Political Science, certificate in Intensive Research Methods, and certificate in Urban Planning and Regional Development. He studied non-linear data analysis at U.C. Berkeley and worked under grants from the National Science Foundation studying political knowledge and the media. Hammet is the former Director of Operations for the international progressive nonprofit Planting Peace where he worked to maintain and expand programs around the world from orphanages and medical relief to human rights and bully prevention. He co-created the rainbow-colored Equality House across from the Westboro Baptist Church and lived in it for 5 years. Hammet’s work and commentary has been covered in The New York Times, The Washington Post, CNN, MSNBC, and most other major outlets. After several years of successfully organizing to win victories from the local to national level, Davis Hammet founded Loud Light to advance youth civic participation and mobilize underrepresented communities in Kansas.

Legal Speaker Series: Voting Rights

As part of our annual Constitution Day celebration, we will host the Honorable Karen Arnold-Burger, Chief Judge of the Kansas Court of Appeals, to discuss a central tenet of our democracy and legal system: voting rights and responsibilities. As voting restrictions continue to be litigated both in Kansas and across the nation, it is essential that we appreciate the importance of voting as a right to all citizens.

Chief Judge Arnold-Burger was appointed to the Kansas Court of Appeals in 2011, and as Chief Judge of that court in 2017. Prior to that, she served as an Assistant U.S. Attorney for the District of Kansas and Presiding Municipal Judge for the City of Overland Park for over 20 years. In 2018, she was appointed by the Chief Justice of the Kansas Supreme Court to chair the statewide pretrial justice task force. A prolific and generous legal speaker, Chief Judge Arnold-Burger has been recognized for her service and teaching by many legal institutions, including the American Bar Association and the National Judicial Council.

Alan Ai is a corporate attorney at Google, where he supports hardware marketing, retail, and partnerships. He is a graduate of Harvard Law School, where he taught in the CopyrightX program and did clinical work at the Berkman Center for Internet & Society. Before joining Google, Alan worked in technology transactions and emerging companies with the Cooley Law Firm. He prides himself on focusing on the legal and business needs of his clients in connection with their technology and intellectual property transactions.

Anyone interested in hearing about corporate law, technology, intellectual property, law firm life, in-house life, or taking a few years after undergrad to teach through Teach For America (in Hawaii!) and working as a legal assistant before law school should join in!

Legal Speaker Series: Tracy Turner

Please join us for our next Legal Speaker next Tuesday. Tracy Turner will talk about his career in the legal department at AT&T, as well as introduce the K-State Mock Trial Summer Camp!

Originally from Great Bend, KS, Tracy graduated Phi Beta Kappa from K-State in 1985 with a dual major B.A. in Economics and Political Science. He declared pre-law in his freshman year, and under the tutelage of then Pre-Law Advisor Nancy Twiss, became a 1984 Truman Scholar while at KSU. He earned his law degree from the University of Texas in 1988, where he graduated with honors, and served on the editorial board of the Texas Review of Litigation. Licensed in Texas, Tracy practiced mass tort and commercial litigation in Dallas, Texas with the law firm of Baker & Botts, before joining the in-house legal department of AT&T in 1996. Tracy's 24-year in-house practice with AT&T evolved with the mergers and acquisitions in telecom in the early 2000s, and ended specializing in e-commerce and consumer mass marketing before his retirement in June 2020. Tracy remains a loyal third generation K-Stater, serving on the Arts & Science Alumni Council and is a trustee level donor to the KSU Foundation. Beginning this year, Tracy is the first-ever KSU Mock Trial Summer Camp Director for high school and collegiate students, July 25 -31, 2021. See Summer Camp (k-state.edu). Tracy has coached and judged Mock Trial in Texas and other midwestern states, including the Skyline (Dallas) HS Mock Trial team in the March 2020 state tournament.

Mary Kate Butterfield is an Assistant United States Attorney in the Western District of Missouri. In her two years with the Department of Justice as an AUSA, Mary Kate has focused her work on violent crime, drug trafficking organizations, and money laundering offenses. Mary Kate began her career in 2012 as a state prosecutor in DuPage County, Illinois, where she worked as an Assistant State’s Attorney for four years. While there, Mary Kate prosecuted a wide array of criminal cases which ranged from misdemeanor offenses to homicide. After four years as an ASA in Illinois, Mary Kate spent two years working for the New South Wales Department of Justice in Sydney, Australia.

Join us for our next Legal Speaker of the fall semester! Professor Shawn Leisinger and several Washburn Law students will discuss opportunities in the rural practice of law.

Washburn Law students will discuss their externship opportunities through the Hansen Foundation at Washburn Law School. The Hansen Foundation works with Washburn to place law students in rural communities. The students work with a local attorney who conducts a private law practice, works for the government or a non-profit organization, serves as a judge, or is engaged in a legal career. Students receive a stipend of $5,000 for expenses during the externship and a tuition scholarship of $4,320 for six credit hours for a concurrent course, “Rural Practice Externship.”

This is a great opportunity to hear directly from law students & a professor about opportunities available at Washburn! Students are welcome to join and ask questions about law school in general or Washburn in particular.

Professor Mulligan joined the KU Law faculty in 2010. He teaches predominantly civil litigation courses. KU Law students have recognized Mulligan for his excellent teaching several times.

Last semester, we hosted a similar event—Prof. Mulligan’s Mock Law Class. We had over 50 students in attendance and had great conversations about topics in law. Junior Tom McClain says "It's a very relaxing environment that helps me think about what a law school class would be like." This semester, Prof. Mulligan will be mixing it up and discussing oral argumentation and present new cases to the class!

Come prepared to discuss your experiences and workshop your writing with other students.

Bring a draft of your personal statement (no matter how rough). If you haven't finished writing, bring a list of your legal experiences, anecdotes about how your thoughts about the law has evolved, and a plan of what you want to convey to your law schools. On Monday, March 4th, a group of Pre-Law students will be vising Washburn Law School! Students will have the opportunity sit in on a law class, tour the law school, and have lunch with Washburn Law School Admissions Representatives or students who have participated in the Hansen Rural Externship Program.

The Office will be arranging carpools leaving from the Manhattan Mall at 9:00 AM on Monday, March 4th.

Legal Speaker Series: Prof. David Pierce, Washburn Law

Join visiting professor, David Pierce of Washburn School of Law, for a discussion on Oil & Gas Law. Prof. Pierce is a nationally recognized expert on Oil & Gas Law. He will discuss his legal practice from the rural setting to working for Shell Oil Company in Houston, TX. Professor Pierce will discuss land use issues, hydraulic fracturing, induced seismicity, and other contemporary issues lawyers encounter while representing farmers, landowners, and developers.

Prof. Pierce has had a unique career in the law working as a solo general practitioner in Neodesha, KS, a City Attorney in Cherryvale, KS, in-house counsel for Shell Oil Company in Houston, TX, of-counsel for Gable & Gotwals in Tulsa, and of-counsel for Shughart Thomson & Kilroy in Kansas City, MO. Prof. Pierce currently teaches Oil & Gas Law, Advanced Oil & Gas Law, Energy Regulation, and Drafting Contracts and Conveyances at Washburn School of Law.

Legal Speaker Series: Liam Reilly, J.D.

Join visiting attorney, Liam Reilly, for an interesting discussion on intellectual property and patent law. Liam is a member of the intellectual property team at Husch Blackwell LLP in Kansas City. His practice focuses primarily around trademarks, patents, and software licensing. Liam also has experience with matters related to data protection and e-commerce disputes.

Liam Reilly is active in both the entrepreneur and small business communities in Kansas City, regularly volunteering his time to assist organizations such as Sprint Accelerator, Plexpod, and UMKC E-scholars Program. This works serves to promote innovational thought throughout the region. Liam received a bachelor's degree in civil engineering from Kansas State University before attending Notre Dame Law School, where he was a Weigand Scholar.

Leadership Studies: Town Hall

With the recent confirmation of Brett Kavanaugh to the United States Supreme Court, you may wonder what to look for this term at the Supreme Court. Professor Lumen Mulligan will provide a lecture about hot topics at the Supreme court by discussing cases to look for and how to new court makeup could affect future cases.

Lumen "Lou" Mulligan joined the KU Law faculty in 2010, where he teaches predominantly civil litigation courses. Professor Mulligan has been continuously recognized for his teaching and mentoring by KU Law students. Professor Mulligan also teaches undergraduate courses within the KU Honors Program. In addition to his teaching, Professor Mulligan oversees KU Law's Medical-Legal Partnerships, which aid low-income clients, and provide law students with field placement experience, and directs KU Law's 3+3 program, LEAD.

Clean Slate Day

Please join the Office of Pre-Law Advising in volunteering at Manhattan Clean Slate Day! This project is a partnership between the Riley County Bar Association and Kansas Legal Services. The Riley County District Court, the Riley County Attorney's Office, the Manhattan Municipal Court, and the Manhattan City Prosecutor's Office are assisting with offering this event.

An expungement is the sealing of a criminal conviction. After an expungement, qualifying criminal convictions can only be discovered by certain individuals, and the conviction only has to be disclosed in certain situations. This is an important legal service because it old criminal records can be a barrier to employment, housing, and services. The event will require a number of volunteers, and that's where you can help!

There will be a training on October 19 from 12-1 PM with lunch provided.

Practice LSAT

There will be a Practice LSAT on Saturday morning, October 20, 2018, in the Wildcat Chamber (formerly Little Theatre) of the K-State Student Union. The cost is $15.00 due at registration.

Pre-register in 215 Fairchild Hall no later than 12:00 Noon on Friday, October 12, 2018. You must pre-pay at the time you register. If the response for this test is insufficient, it will be cancelled so please register timely.

The practice test will be treated as a real LSAT. With that being said, arrive at the test a little early to get signed in. Bring a photo ID, an analogue watch, #2 pencils and an eraser to the test. No mechanical pencils, hats, or hoods are permitted. Please let the office know if you need a certain test or if you have taken many prior tests.

Personal Statement Workshop

Tracey Lee, Pre-Law Office, and Jim Hohenbary, Nationally Competitive Scholarships, will host a workshop for all students to improve their personal statements. We will provide a short program about how to make the most of your two pages, but the majority of the workshop will be devoted to developing your ideas and cultivating your story. You must come prepared to discuss your experiences and workshop your writing with other students.

Bring a draft of your personal statement (no matter how rough). If you haven't finished writing, bring a list of your legal experiences, anecdotes about how your thoughts about the law has evolved, and a plan of what you want to convey to your law schools.
The goal of this session is to provide you the tools to complete or improve your draft. There will be a follow-up workshop at which you can bring a second draft to workshop with other students.

Legal Speaker Series: Elsbeth Magilton, J.D.

Join visiting attorney Elsbeth Magilton, Executive Director of the Space, Cyber, and Telecommunications law program at the University of Nebraska College of Law, as she discusses her career in international space law. Elsbeth's current research focus areas include commercial space law and policy, cybersecurity and innovative technologies, and national security. Find her most recent legal article, "Ready Party One: The History and Developing Role of Online Dispute Resolution Technology From VoIP to Virtual Reality," published in the Penn State Arbitration Law Review, Fall 2018.

Elsbeth Magilton is a member of both the Nebraska Bar Association and the National Women in Aerospace organization. She also hosts the U.S. State Department Visiting Leaders Program, focused on Women in Stem, Cybersecurity, and National Security, annually. Elsbeth is the Nebraska College of Law's principal investigator for projects serving the U.S. Strategic Command's University Affiliated Research Center - the only such center in the Department of Defense to include a law school in their research partnerships.

Washburn Rural Legal Speaker: Shawn Leisinger

Come hear from Professor Shawn Leisinger of Washburn Law School as he discusses ethical issues in rural practice and career options for lawyers in rural areas. Special focus will be given to discussion of the variety of traditional and non-traditional roles that lawyers can take on in rural areas and will then more broadly move to discussion of the broader ethical and moral obligations for attorneys in rural practice settings.

Shawn Leisinger is the Executive Director of the Centers for Excellence. The Centers are focused in the areas of Advocacy, Business and Transactional Law, Children and Family Law, International and Comparative Law, Law and Government, and Oil and Gas Law. Shawn oversees development of the Center's programming and the actual events and activities of the Centers throughout the year.

Kansas Supreme Court Guest Lecture

Kansas Supreme Court Visits Manhattan, KS

The Kansas Supreme Court will hear two cases in a special session at Manhattan High School as part of its ongoing outreach to familiarize Kansans with the high court, its work, and the overall role of Kansas judiciary. This will mark the Supreme Court's first visit to Manhattan in the court's 157-year history. The court will be in session from 6:30 PM - 8:00 PM on Monday, September 24, in the high school auditorium. After the session concludes, the justices will greet the public in an informal reception outside the auditorium.

Plan to arrive at the auditorium early to allow time to get through a security screening. Doors will open at 6 PM.

If you can not attend in person, there will be a live stream of the event on the judicial branch homepage at www.kscourts.org under the Watch Supreme Court Live! tab.

Take time to review the docket if you would like to have a better idea of what to expect from the Supreme Court visit.

Washburn Rural Legal Speaker: Roger McEowen

Join Washburn Law professor, Roger McEowen, for an interesting discussion about agricultural law. Agriculture and other activities in rural America face increasing levels of environmental and other regulation. Rural lawyers must be knowledgeable in agricultural law to effectively represent their clients needs.

Professor Roger A. McEowen is the Kansas Farm Bureau Professor of Agricultural Law and Taxation at Washburn University School of Law in Topeka, Kansas. He is also a Tax Director, Agribusiness and Cooperatives, Midwest Region, for Clifton Larson Allen in West Des Moines, Iowa.

He received a B.S. with distinction from Purdue University in Management in 1986, an M.S. in Agricultural Economics from Iowa State University in 1990, and a J.D. from the Drake University School of Law in 1991.

Law Fair

The K-State Pre-Law Ambassadors and the Office of Pre-Law Advising are hosting a law fair on September 7, 2018, in the Alumni Center Banquet Room. The fair will begin at 10:00 AM and last until 1:00 PM. Over 50 law schools will be represented!

For the Fair, please come in casual attire. The law schools understand that you are coming between classes but please look neat and clean; save the ripped jeans for another day. You don’t need a resume.

Come prepared to ask questions of the school representatives. Ask about their certificate programs, chances to study abroad, specific areas of interest, trial teams, etc. This is your chance to learn about the differences among the schools and find the right ones for you.

The fair is open to all students, across all majors and will be a come-and-go event. Feel free to stay for a few minutes or a few hours. Registration is available at the door or online.

The Office of Pre-Law Advising and Pre-Law Ambassadors are excited to welcome Judge Meryl D. Wilson, Chief Judge of the Riley County District Court, as the debut speaker for our new Legal Speaker Series. The Speaker Series is designed to give students at Kansas State University more exposure to the vast array of legal professions through expert speakers in diverse legal professions.

Judge Wilson is a Kansas State University alum with a history of interesting legal work, including once suing the school. He graduated from Kansas State in 1971 with a degree in History and received his law degree from Washburn University. He was engaged in the private practice of Law before joining the bench as District Judge on April 18, 1997 and has been serving Riley County ever since.

Judge Wilson will speak to students about his own legal career, preparing for and attending law school, the path to becoming a judge and the view from the Bench.

“Professor Mulligan joined the KU Law faculty in 2010, where he teaches predominantly civil litigation courses. In the ensuing years, KU Law students have recognized Mulligan for his teaching several times, including awarding him the Dean Frederick J. Moreau teaching and mentoring award. Mulligan has authored or co-authored four books and treatises on jurisdiction and procedure and often writes for the bar-association press. State and federal courts at all levels cite Mulligan's scholarship regularly.”

The Honorable Paul Howard is a Judge on the Federal Circuit Court of Australia. He is visiting the United States through the Fulbright Visiting Scholar Program: Fulbright Professional Scholarship.

Judge Howard’s research centers on access to justice and the funding and administration of Federal Courts. He is the author of several scholarly works on the administration and nature of the Courts. He will talk about the Federal systems of Australia and the USA, International Law, and the view from the bench.

This is a wonderful opportunity to meet a practicing judge from Australia and learn how two common law systems with similar roots have developed differently.

The Department of Philosophy has partnered with the Office of Pre-Law Advising to offer students a unique opportunity to learn how to better tackle the Law School Admissions Test (LSAT).

On Monday, April 16, 2018, from 4:00-6:00 PM, Dr. Bruce Glymour, head of the Philosophy Department, will run a session on using logic, modal reasoning, and statistical reasoning to solve LSAT Reading Comprehension and Logical Reasoning problems.

On Tuesday , April 17, 2018, from 4:00-6:00 PM, Dr. Graham Leach-Krouse, professor of logic, will run a session on using logic and other tricks to solve Analytical Reasoning (Logic Games) problems on the LSAT.

This is an excellent opportunity to build up the skills and strategy needed to better tackle LSAT problems and learn more about the types of problems you will encounter on the LSAT.
