Sikhs: Who Are They?

My name is Manreet Singh Bhullar, and I am a faculty member at K-State. I am a Sikh by religion, and as a part of my faith and culture, I tie a turban which makes me look different. A Sikh's turban, often perceived as a symbol of extremism, is a factual representation of equality. Unfortunately, ignorance and lack of education about other religions/ethnicities have led to extravagant incidents, mentally and physically affecting the communities. These incidents elevate hatred and racial discrimination, which lie deep within the social structure of modern civilization.

I want to take this opportunity to share information on my religion, faith, and beliefs at the KSUnite event to foster a more inclusive environment at K-State. And currently, we do have several Sikh folks at K-State – current students, faculty, and alumni - who all together, along with others, contribute to the rich diversity on campus. Sikhism is the fifth-largest religion globally, with 700k Sikhs living in the U.S. The word Sikh (pronounced "sickh") means 'disciple' or 'learner.' The Sikh religion was founded in Northern India in the fifteenth century. Sikhism is a monotheistic religion (there is one God) and stresses equality among all. Human rights and justice form a cornerstone of Sikh belief, and Sikh history features countless examples of making tremendous sacrifices for the cause of religious freedom and justice. The presentation will include information on the Sikh identity, Sikh scripture, the holy temple, and the Sikh way of life. Also, the presentation will share an overview of the culture among Sikhs – birth, wedding, celebrations, food, etc. Please come join the interactive breakout session on Oct 12 to learn more about the Sikhs.
