Beginning English I (DAS 136) Listening and Speaking
A student who successfully completes this course will be able to:
- Identify topics in basic English discourse.
- Follow along with/read while listening to simple stories and/or conversations.
- Complete basic cloze passages and do simple dictations.
- Identify details in basic English discourse.
- Follow simple oral explanations/directions.
- Spell key vocabulary words at-level.
- Understand and respond to basic questions.
- Use at-level* vocabulary on familiar/personal topics.
- Produce most consonant and vowel sounds.
- Demonstrates awareness of suprasegmentals.
- Acquire sufficient basic vocabulary to participate in simple life-skills based conversations.
- Use survival English.
- Use situationally appropriate grammar in the context of a guided conversation.
- Follow and participate in conversations at level*.
Beginning English I (DAS 136) Written Communication
A student who successfully completes this course will be able to:
- Comprehend and use correct word order, and parts of speech in simple sentence patterns (affirmative, negative, and interrogative).
- Understand and use to be, to have and there in present and past.
- Understand and use simple present and present progressive.
- Understand and use adverbs of frequency.
- Understand and use simple past.
- Identify and use count and non-count nouns.
- Understand and use subject, object pronouns and possessive adjectives.
- Understand and use prepositions of place and time.
- Identify and understand time clauses with before, after, and when.
- Write a complete sentence (statement, negative sentence, question) that:
- starts with a capital letter.
- ends with the correct punctuation.
- has the correct word order.
- has the correct subject-verb (pronoun) agreement.
- contains the correct present or past tense.
- Identify and correct mistakes of punctuation, subject-verb agreement, word order, and tense (simple present, simple past, and present progressive) at the sentence level.
- Write several sentences (simplified paragraph) that show a logical flow of ideas.
Beginning English I (DAS 136) Reading
A student who successfully completes this course will be able to:
- Use the first 450 most common English words.
- Identify the 5 most common prefixes and suffixes and learn the meaning of the prefix and part of speech of the suffix.
- Identify articles (a, an, the).
- Identify the subject and verb of a sentence.
- Identify the part of speech of a word (v, n, adj, adv).
- Identify the noun a pronoun refers to.
- Read verbs in simple present, past, present progressive and future.
- Answer simple comprehension questions (who, what, when, where, why).
- Identify topics/categories.
- Put sentences into logical order/sequence.
- Respond to questions with a short answer.
