Certificate of Proficiency in English for Academic Purposes

A student giving a presentation This undergraduate certificate provides official recognition for those whose primary language is not English and who demonstrate the English proficiency needed for academic work at the university level through their studies in the English Language Program. This corresponds to a B2: Independent User level on the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).

Any combination of online or in-person classes may be used to meet the certificate course requirements.

Program Requirements

Required Certificate Courses

A course from each of the four Core Skill areas or standardized language test scores documenting B2 English proficiency in any areas for which coursework is not completed at Kansas State University.

- DAS 151 Advanced English Speaking for Non-native Speakers of English (3 cr. hrs.)
Written English Skills (one of these courses)
- DAS 152 Advanced English Writing I (6 cr. hrs.)
- DAS 166 Advanced English Writing III (3 cr. hrs.)
- DAS 177 Written Communication for Non-Native Speakers of English (3 cr. hrs.)
English Reading Skills (one of these courses)
- DAS 153 Advanced English Reading I for Non-native Speakers of English (6 cr. hrs.)
- DAS 163 Advanced English Reading II for Non-Native Speakers of English (3 cr. hrs.)
- DAS 176 Reading Skills for Non-Native Speakers of English (3 cr. hrs.)
English Listening Skills (one of these courses)
- DAS 154 Advanced English Listening I for Non-native Speakers of English (3 cr. hrs.)
- DAS 178 Listening Skills (3 cr. hrs.)
- For students who have standardized language test scores accepted by K-State documenting B2 level proficiency for any of the core skill areas, classes from the Special English Skills Courses list may be used toward the certificate.

Courses in this group are available only if students submit standardized test scores recognized by Kansas State University documenting English proficiency at the B2 level for one or more of the core skills listed above.

Costs

Admission Requirements

Students must meet ELP placement standards in order to enroll in courses required for the certificate.

These prerequisites may be met by scores on the WildCAT English Proficiency Test, by a standardized test score recognized by K-State , or by successful completion of Intermediate English classes (DAS 150 Reading, Writing, Listening, and Speaking) in the English Language Program at Kansas State University.
