WildCAT English Proficiency Test (EPT)
Students must show English Proficiency to begin university classes. You can do this with passing scores on an accepted standardized language test (for example: iBT, IELTS, etc.). If you do not have passing English test scores, you can take the WildCAT English Proficiency Test (EPT) online from home or in-person on campus after you travel to Manhattan. To register for the test, contact the English Language Program. The WildCAT EPT is available to admitted undergraduate students and to prospective Graduate Pathway students upon recommendation from the Graduate School or Graduate Program Director.
Depending upon your scores and admission status, you will be placed in full-time intensive English classes, part-time English and academic classes, or full-time academic classes. See university standards for undergraduate or graduate students.
The WildCAT English Proficiency Test consists of the following parts:
Essay – 35 minutes
- You can choose between two essay topics.
- You write your essay on the computer.
- Plan to use all 35 minutes to write your essay. This will help you get a better score!
WildCAT Test
- Structure (grammar)
- Reading / Vocabulary
- Listening
These sections are not timed. It usually takes students about 1 hour and 30 minutes to finish all three of these sections of the test.
The WildCAT is a computer adaptive test. The questions that you get will change according to your level. If you miss a question, you get an easier question. If you get a question correct, you get a more difficult question. You get questions until we accurately know your level of English. You will answer about 25 questions in each skill area.
Speaking Proficiency Test
The WildCAT EPT does not have a speaking component, so students whose EPT results place them into part-time ELP and part-time university classes will take the Speaking Proficiency Test to determine if they need an ELP speaking class.
After you register you will be invited to join the WildCAT-101 Canvas course that will show you sample questions and provide you with detailed modules. Please be sure to complete this mini course, so you are ready to take the test.
You will receive an email at your K-State email address from elp@k-state.edu with your test scores within 3 business days after your test date.
This email will contain:
- Your test scores.
- Your placement into English and/or academic classes at Kansas State University.
- The opportunity to register for a live meeting to talk about your results with an ELP Advisor.
- Information about enrolling in classes at Kansas State University.
