Satellite-enabled Resilient Ag Project

SatRAP in the Southern Great Plains

The USDA National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA) Sustainable Ag Systems (SAS) Satellite-enabled Resilient Ag Project for the Southern Great Plains is housed within the Kansas Water Institute. This project features partnerships among multiple institutions across the country (including co-lead institutions Oklahoma State University and Texas Tech University) to support agricultural systems reliant on the High Plains Aquifer in adapting to climate change and enhancing their resilience. The program is focused within the southern Great Plains Region, and will work to develop best-management practices and socio-economic support systems to enable a successful transition from irrigated farm systems to economically sustainable and water-smart production systems.

Amy Hardberger

My whole career has been informed by multi-disciplinary work. I started out as a scientist before attending law school and all my pre-academia jobs merged science, policy, and economics, so it is the place I feel most comfortable. Science is only as effective as its ability to be implemented out in the world. This is particularly important when you are trying to motivate people to change their water use for the benefit of future generations. Law and policy can help or hurt that effort. My job on grants such as SatRAP is to evaluate the amazing scientific research through a policy lens to predict behavioral impacts and make recommendations for policy changes if some is needed.
