Peer Tutoring Qualifications/Job Description
Educational Supportive Services provides individualized tutorial assistance to students to help them develop the academic and study skills necessary for success in the college classroom. We offer tutorial services for courses at all undergraduate levels.
Job Description
Academic peer tutors work with students on a one-on-one or small group basis. The main expectation is to support or supplement regular classroom instruction. Peer tutors report to the ESS Academic Services Coordinator.
Qualifications:
- Have a 3.0 grade point average
- Preferred: tutors having completed courses they are tutoring at KSU with an A or B
- Must provide names of references from two KSU staff/faculty or former employer on forms provided by ESS
- Must be available to attend mandatory tutor meetings and training sessions
Expectations of an effective tutor are:
- Responsibility, dependability, and accuracy in subject
- Ability to communicate clearly and follow direction.
- Understanding of learning styles, cultural awareness and competencies
- Sincere desire to help fellow students succeed in college
Objectives for peer tutors:
- Promote independent learning
- Help build tutee confidence
- Develop learning strategies
Tutor session guidelines include
- Developing a plan of action for success with tutee
- Reviewing readings, homework assignments, quizzes and past exams
- Making appropriate referrals for tutees who need assistance with writing, math, or study skills enhancement
- Monitoring tutee progress, record weekly hours and making evaluations on appropriate forms
- Exhibiting professional behavior at all times
- Being patient and understanding during the tutoring session
- Offering praise when warranted and providing encouragement
Pay rate:
$7.50/hour: Undergraduate
$8.00/hour: Graduate
Raises will occur based upon supervisor review of tutor performance and budget projections.
*Hours are based upon tutoring needs. ESS staff will determine the hours of employment for each tutor according to a tutor/tutee class schedules.
