GUEST LECTURE WITH SOUTHERN CHEYENNE ARTIST EDGAR HEAP OF BIRDS
MANHATTAN – Students, faculty, and community members are invited to attend a lecture with Southern Cheyenne artist Edgar Heap of Birds on Wednesday, September 18 at 3:00 p.m. on the K-State campus in Justin Hall room 109.
Heap of Birds’ lecture, “Heads Above Grass; Provocative Native American Public art and Studio Fine Art Practice,” will showcase politically charged, community based, public art deployments throughout the U.S. and Europe which articulate current day struggles of Indian peoples for social justice. The talk will also present studio art created to explore personal freedoms and the investigation of self.
Edgar has taught Native American Studies at the University of Oklahoma since 1988 and has served as a Visiting Professor at Yale University, Rhode Island School of Design, and the University of Cape Town. His work has been exhibited at the Museum of Modern Art, Whitney Museum of American Art, The National Gallery of Canada, and the Museum of Contemporary art in Australia, and he has received grants and awards from the National Endowment for the Arts, Rockefeller Foundation, and the Andy Warhol Foundation among others.
