Graduate Program

M.A. and Ph.D. Degrees

The K-State Department of History offers both M.A. and Ph.D. degrees. Our department's main strengths are in the following areas:

Military History

Our excellent scholars in this field and K-State's interdisciplinary graduate program in Security Studies (which works closely with the Command and General Staff College at Fort Leavenworth) has earned us recognition as one of best military history programs in the country. Students wishing to specialize in military history have a broad range of courses to choose from, and Manhattan's proximity to both the Eisenhower and Truman Presidential Libraries provides our students with a rich source of primary materials. The Eisenhower lecture series regularly brings world-renowned scholars to campus, and the Chinese Military History Society is organized by a department faculty member.

Science, Technology, Medicine and Environment

The department has a number of scholars specializing in science, technology, medicine and environmental history, with multiple published books and articles in these fields as well as extensive research. Seven individuals make up the core faculty in these areas.

Gender History

K-State has several faculty who primarily study the effects of gender and sexuality in the history of various regions of the world. This field of study affects social history, immigration, military history, labor history, and many others. Several of our faculty have published books and multiple articles on the effects of gender and sexuality in history.

Graduate Microcredentials

We also offer 3 graduate microcredentials in US History, European History, and Military History open to both current K-State Students and Nondegree Students.
