The K-State Department of Entomology cordially invites you to attend the 10-year anniversary party celebrating the founding of the K-State Insect Zoo. Dedicated in the fall of 2002, the Insect Zoo began with limited hours and exhibits. It now houses a wealth of species, interactive displays, and ever-changing exhibits of live insects and their relatives. Star attractions such as the Leaf-Cutter Ant Exhibit, the Tropical Night House, and the Honey Bee Observation Hive fascinate visitors of all ages.
The Insect Zoo has grown into a popular learning and entertainment destination for the campus and larger community. Since official record keeping began in 2006, the Insect Zoo has hosted over 50,000 visitors, with more than 1,000 visitors in June 2012 alone.
Zoo staff and volunteers participate in outreach programs in the community, as well as partner with the Manhattan Sunset Zoo to deliver educational outreach programs throughout the state. Located in the historic K-State Dairy Barn and surrounded by the K-State Gardens, the Insect Zoo is a popular destination for tourists traveling through the Flint Hills.
Although the zoo first gained popularity with school groups, most of the visitors to the Insect Zoo are now small family groups looking for an inexpensive, fun and educational activity. As one visitor mused, "It's where you go with the kids to hang out."
Please join us on Saturday, September 15th, to celebrate 10 years of success in bringing wonder and learning to K-State and the Manhattan community.
