KSU Amateur Radio Club Minutes

Minutes - February 18, 1997

The regular meeting of the KSUARC was called to order by Kurt Zoglmann, KBØTMQ at 7:00 P.M.

Norm Dillman, NØJCC announced that since Manhattan DXer Bill Schrenk, WØPAH has moved into a retirement facility, his station is unfortunately being dismantled, and some station accessories would go to our club, including a CW key presented by KSUARC to Dr. Schrenk.

Chris Casey, NØVRP reported on the packet/internet project. He reports major problems with the 386 computers locking up, thus making them impractical for a server that would run constantly. Numerous options for different computers were considered. A search is underway. At this time there is no definite solution to this set-back.

Norm Dillman, NØJCC moved that we have two BBSs, one at NØIN's, and one in 401 Seaton Hall. No final action was taken.

It was suggested that we purchase a Windom antenna for the 80 / 40 / 15 / 10 bands. This is a wire antenna that would be useful for temporary activities such as Open House. The club, in true amateur form, voted to buy the thing if we can't find someone who will loan us one.

At the Feb. 4 meeting we voted to buy a Heil headset. Lacking a catalog at that meeting, the club confirmed that the model we would get is the Heil Pro-Set, which has full-size noise canceling earphones. Included in the approx. $131 cost is our choice of cartridges. We will get the HC-4 "DX Dream Machine". We will also purchase the AD-1 adaptor for ICOM transceivers.

Bill Kuhn, KO4MH has been contacted about the possibility of some of our alumni operating our station for one or more contests. The gentlemen who proposed this are veteran contesters Lee Buller, KØWA and ARRL Midwest Division Vice-Director Bruce Frahm, KØBJ. The club supported this proposal and agreed to provide keys and access for their contesting. (ed. note: Be sure to show up when they're here, to see contesting done right.)

Will, N2ODW explained how he is visiting with amateurs worldwide via the Internet, and interfacing the audio to local repeaters. Quite the deal.

A motion was made and passed that the club keep the CW key previously owned by Bill Schrenk, for its historical and sentimental value.

The meeting was adjourned at 8:28 P.M.

David Yoder, KAØJPM
secretary-treasurer
