| While home to the richest people in the world, contemporary cities also give rise to extreme forms of poverty and inequality. This course will investigate some of the social and economic inequalities that shape contemporary cities. The class will focus on broad debates rather than delving deeply into one specific field. On a weekly basis, the course will introduce different lenses for considering inequality. Focusing on processes such as segregation, gentrification, informality, policing, fortification, and enclaving, the course will tie these to how the contemporary city is produced, governed, and imagined. | |||||||

| This class will use short readings from notable autobiographies, such as Trevor Noah, Wes Moore, and Temple Grandin, as models for discussion of personal statement writing. We will go through a multi-draft personal statement writing process and fine tune our skills at interpreting what is being asked for in various personal statement prompts. The goal is to learn how to tell your story with authenticity and style. | |||||||
