Expression of Strengths Symposium in the College of Arts and Sciences

The College of Arts and Sciences invites all faculty, staff and students to attend a symposium from 2:30-5 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 31, in 301 Calvin Hall. The symposium will showcase selected research projects within the college included in the 2019 edition of "Expression of University Strengths" book, published by the K-State Governmental Relations Office and distributed to federal legislative offices.

The symposium will include a five-minute presentation and five-minute Q&A session for each of the following research projects. Guests are welcome to attend individual presentations or stay for the entirety of the event. Light refreshments will be served.

The schedule of presentations follows:

  • 2:30 p.m.: Introductory remarks by Dean Amit Chakrabarti. 
  • 2:40 p.m.: "Cognitive and Neurobiological Approaches to Plasticity, or CNAP, Center," presented by Kimberly Kirkpatrick, psychological sciences department.
  • 2:50 p.m.: "Microbiomes of Aquatic, Plant and Soil Systems (MAPS) Mediating Sustainability," presented by Walter Dodds, Division of Biology. 
  • 3 p.m.: "Developing Critical Zone Research on the Konza Prairie," presented by Matthew Kirk, geology department. 
  • 3:10 p.m.: Break.
  • 3:20 p.m.: "NSF Long-Term Ecological Research, or LTER, Program at Konza Prairie: Contributing to the conservation and management of grasslands worldwide," presented by John Blair, Division of Biology.
  • 3:30 p.m.: "NSF National Ecological Observatory Network, or NEON," presented by John Blair, Division of Biology.
  • 3:40 p.m.: "Coupled Climate, Cultivation, and Culture in the Great Plains: Understanding Water Supply and Water Quality in a Fragile Landscape," presented by Marcellus Caldas, geography department. 
  • 3:50 p.m.: "Scene Perception and Event Comprehension Theory, or SPECT: An integrated computational, behavioral and neuroscientific model of event perception, understanding, and memory," presented by Lester Loschky, psychological sciences department. 
  • 4 p.m.: Break.
  • 4:10 p.m.: "Community Collaboration in Juvenile Justice," presented by Sue Williams, sociology, anthropology, and social work department, and Greg Paul, communication studies department. 
  • 4:20 p.m.: "Developing a Value Literate Culture in Science," presented by Scott Tanona, philosophy department. 
  • 4:30 p.m.: "Center for Research and Innovation in STEM Education, or CeRISE," presented by Dean Zollman, center director. 
  • 4:40 p.m.: "Kansas Lipidomics Research Center: Poised for Discoveries Critical to Crop Improvement," presented by Timothy Durrett, biochemistry and molecular biophysics department. 
  • 4:50 p.m.: "Fundamental Cancer Research through the Johnson Cancer Research Center," presented by Keith Chapes.
  • 5 p.m.: Ending remarks.
