New to you: Upcycling events promote sustainability

Submitted by Hannah Ens

Sustainability and upcycling will take center stage at the Pop-Up Thrift Shop and Twisted Totes events from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday, April 3, in the K-State Student Union courtyard.

Students can swap or select new-to-you items at the free Pop-Up Thrift Shop, featuring gently used men's and women's clothing, shoes and accessories. Anyone who donates to the shop will be entered into a prize drawing for gift cards. Donations can be left in the donation bin outside the Union Program Council office, 054 Union on the ground floor, or brought on the day of the event. After the shop closes, remaining items will be donated to area agencies to support the community.

Upcycle a T-shirt into a reusable Twisted Tote to take home all your finds. Bring a shirt from home, pop into the Pop-Up Thrift Shop for one or use one provided for free. By making a twisted tote and using it as a grocery bag, laundry bag or beach tote, fewer plastic bags will be dumped in the landfill. If you have plastic bags at home, they can be taken for recycling at many large grocery stores and retail chains like Dillon's, Hy-Vee, Walmart and Target. When you shop with your own twisted tote or reusable bag, some stores will give you a discount, such as 5 cents off per bag used at Target.

More information about recycling on campus can be found here.

The Pop-Up Thrift Shop is sponsored by UPC. Twisted Totes is sponsored by the Union Recycling Committee and Students for Environmental Action with support from the Green Action Fund. For more information, visit kstateupc.com or call 785-532-6571.
