Johnson Cancer Research Center fall award applications due Oct. 1

Submitted by Marcia Locke

Kansas State University's Johnson Cancer Research Center is now accepting applications for its fall semester awards for faculty and students.

The center, which is part of the College of Arts and Sciences, supports the research and training of its affiliated faculty in 20 departments of five colleges through competitive award programs. Support also is available for undergraduate and graduate students and postdoctoral fellows.

Center-affiliated faculty members are eligible to apply for awards and sponsor applications of their students. Unaffiliated faculty members who do cancer-relevant research at K-State are invited to become affiliates and apply for awards. All student applications must be submitted by center-affiliated faculty mentors.

Innovative Research Awards provide faculty researchers with seed money to gather preliminary data crucial for future major grant proposals. Other awards provide modest funds for travel to learn new scientific techniques or visit collaborators at other institutions. Awards also are available to assist with travel expenses for graduate students and postdoctoral fellows to present at scientific meetings.

Undergraduate students are eligible for the Cancer Research Award program. Awardees work on research projects in their faculty mentors' laboratories and receive $1,500 awards in late spring. Mentors also receive $1,000 per student for research expenses.

Award information and applications are on the center's Award programs webpage. The deadline for submission is Oct. 1.

The Johnson Cancer Research Center's mission is to further the understanding of cancer by funding cancer research and supporting higher education, training and public outreach. Its awards are funded by private donations.
