Join the KSUnite breakout sessions on race

According to "Diversity's Promise for Higher Education" by Daryl Smith, originally published in 2009, "It is widely acknowledged that all groups are classified into racial categories, usually for purposes linked to gaining power or maintaining the status quo. Numerous books document ways in which race has shifted in terms of how groups are treated and classified and how individuals identify. Some scholars therefore urge shifting from the language of race, to that of racism, to capture the social meanings for race. It is racism as an ideology that produces the notion of race, not the existence of race that produces racism."
As part KSUnite: Moving Forward Together on Wednesday, Nov. 6, two breakout sessions will focus on race.
- "The Trauma of Racism and Its Impact on Productivity," presented by Joyce Baptist, associate professor, School of Family Studies and Human Services.
- "Yesterday and Today," presented by Marta Alfonso-Durruty, associate professor; Nadia Shapkina, assistant professor; and Kevin Steinmetz, associate professor, all from the sociology, anthropology, and social work department.
