Butch KuKanich to present Anatomy and Physiology Seminar

Submitted by Gail Eyestone

Butch KuKanich, professor and assistant department head of anatomy and physiology, will present "Clinical Trials of a Long-Acting Analgesic in Perioperative Dogs" as part of the Anatomy and Physiology Seminar series. His presentation will be at 4 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 18, in the Mara Conference Center, 407 Trotter Hall.

The focus of KuKanich’s research in the Analytical Pharmacology Laboratory is the evaluation and design of rational drug dosages through the use of pharmacokinetic, pharmacodynamic, and pharmacokinetic-pharmacodynamics studies. The evaluation of analgesics and analgesic adjuncts in companion animals is an area of current research for the Analytical Pharmacology Laboratory. The assessment of opioids, NMDA antagonists, adrenergic agonists, and GABA-ergic drugs compromise the bulk of the efforts. Collaborative studies in all areas of pharmacology are supported by the laboratory through analytical methodology, pharmacokinetic and pharmacokinetic-pharmacodynamics modeling.

KuKanich received his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine from Virginia-Maryland Regional College of Veterinary Medicine, Virginia Tech, and doctorate in comparative biomedical sciences, North Carolina State University. He is a diplomate, of the American College of Veterinary Clinical Pharmacology.
