New online intersession course explores perfect podcasting

Submitted by Journalism and Mass Communications

Beginning in May 2020 intersession, the A.Q. Miller School of Journalism and Mass Communications will offer Perfect Podcasting, an online course for three credits, outlines the possibilities of monetizing podcasts of every description. Course participants also will create a podcast that will add value to a business, an institution, a hobby, a cause, etc.

Perfect Podcasting focuses on the history, form and functions of podcasting as a mass communication tool that is increasingly replacing broadcast radio as America's audio delivery system of choice. Nonfictional and fictional narratives, spoken word content, public service, current events-based reports, music, and a variety of "chum casts" — just a few of podcasting’s ever-developing art forms — will be unpacked, demonstrated and practiced. Special attention will be paid to podcasting's presentational conventions which will improve the effectiveness of both rookie and veteran podcasters, a conversation which will include the technical necessities of producing a podcast outside of a radio/audio studio.

Ian Punnett, the course designer and instructor, is a nationally broadcast, weekend radio personality for Coast to Coast AM Radio and author who was on the forefront of early experiments with net-native podcasts. He also consults for several local and national podcasters who will be brought in as classroom guests.
