Sign up for trainings for Records and Information Management Month

Submitted by Cailin Riley

April is Records and Information Management Month. This topic is dedicated to informing professionals about the importance of securing, managing and organizing sensitive work information online.

Due to increased requests for records management guidance across campus, Ryan Leimkuehler, university records manager, will host a Records Management 101 training from 10-11:30 a.m. April 21 via Zoom. Participants will learn about the basic information needed for record creators, how to manage those records in accordance with Kansas law and provide guidance on best practices while working from home.

You can find out how to join this training at the event page or through HRIS self-enrollment. Additional information and best practices can be found at the K-State Records Management page.

If you are interested in learning more about how to secure and organize your work information online, Leimkuehler also offers training sessions for individuals, small groups and large groups. Below are the two types of trainings he offers; if you are interested in setting up a training, please contact Leimkuehler at rleimkue@k-state.edu

Introduction to Records Management: Records Management 101: This course covers the basic information needed for records creators and designees. The course walks attendees through why records management is important, the university retention schedule, legal requirements, paper and electronic records and concludes with an in-depth discussion on how to identify records.

Electronic Records Management and Shared Drive Clean-Up: This course covers the basics of cleaning up an office's shared drive, such as a network drive, Google Drive, Microsoft Teams or StaffNet space. The course walks attendees through the process of how to identify what records are in the shared drive, who created them, retention requirements and demonstrates programs/software that will identify duplicate records and will clean up space for future use.
