Saxophone professor releases new book, 'The Saxophonist as Musician First — A Sampling of Resources'

Submitted by Blakely Bunning

Anna Marie Wytko

Anna Marie Wytko, associate professor of saxophone, has written the new book "The Saxophonist as Musician First — A Sampling of Resources." Published by RJ Upmarket Press, the book is the first edition in a planned series addressing various resource materials for the saxophonist who genuinely embraces the notion of comprehensive musicianship.

Implicit in the contents is the notion that saxophonists are musicians first and saxophonists second, and that a thorough approach to the study of the saxophone must necessarily include a variety of resources. While some of these resources are very clearly saxophone specific, including professional recordings of saxophone literature, books addressing historical aspects of the instrument, and pedagogical books treating such specialized topics as high tone study and articulation, relevant resources are not limited to those materials that include the word saxophone. Wytko's pedagogy book, "The Saxophonist as Rank Beginner and Beyond: A Guide for Saxophone Methods Class, Band Directors, and Private Instructors" (RJ Upmarket Press), is currently being used as a textbook at major universities nationally and internationally.
