Get your flu shot this fall

Kansas State University and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention are urging students, faculty and staff to get a flu shot this fall.
From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. this Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, Lafene Health Center is holding a walk-in flu vaccine clinic for students, faculty and staff in the K-State Union Ballroom. No appointment is necessary and attendees should bring a student or staff ID and any insurance information. Many health care insurers cover an annual flu shot at 100% or close to it. If the vaccine is not covered, the cost for students is $22 and $25 for faculty and staff at the clinic.
The flu season, which peaks from December to February, annually sees hundreds of thousands hospitalized for the flu virus and tens of thousands of deaths because of it. In 2019, the CDC recorded 490,600 Americans hospitalized and 34,200 dead because of the flu.
The flu virus is a respiratory virus similar to COVID-19. To date, COVID-19 has strained hospitals and health care providers and killed nearly 200,000 Americans.
Getting a flu shot, coupled with wearing a face covering, washing your hands regularly and practicing physical distancing, greatly reduces the likelihood of contracting and spreading the flu and COVID-19 viruses. These simple measures help lessen the strain put on hospitals by those who are susceptible to the flu or COVID-19 viruses, according to the CDC.
