Virtual tutors needed for K-12 tutoring initiative

Submitted by Roger W. Schieferecke

Students looking for professional development, organizational and community service, and a desire to support K-12 learners and families throughout Kansas are encouraged to apply for a volunteer tutoring position with the Wildcat Community Tutoring and Educational Enrichment Initiative.

The initiative is a collaborative effort of the College of Education, College of Health and Human Sciences, and the Staley School of Leadership Studies to provide quality, free online tutoring and enrichment activities for K-12 learners and families throughout Kansas. As more students are learning remotely, the need for academic support is growing.

Volunteer tutors are needed at all grade levels and disciplines. Volunteers must be able to:

  • Commit to virtually tutoring a minimum of one hour per week, using Zoom, throughout the fall semester.
  • Virtually attend and complete required orientation and training.
  • Provide their own technology — computer/iPad, Wi-Fi, etc.
  • Be proficient with Zoom platform.
  • Successfully complete a background check.

Volunteers will tutor virtually in pairs and be placed with K-12 students appropriate to the tutor's experience and expertise. Applications are being accepted on a rolling basis, but students are encouraged to apply today.
