Mental Illness Awareness Week, National Depression Screening Day

Submitted by Shawn Funk

Depression impacts nearly 7% of American adults each year, according to Mental Health America, 2020. Anyone, at any age, and people of any race or ethnic group can experience depression. Depression is never a normal part of life, no matter what your age, gender or health situation.

Effective treatment is available for depression yet only about one-third of those suffering from depression seek help, according to Mental Health America, 2020.

During the week of Oct. 4-10, the U.S. recognizes Mental Illness Awareness Week, which coincides with National Depression Screening Day on Oct. 8. Please join Counseling Services and Lafene Health Center in the Union today from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. to learn more about depression, counseling services and to help raise awareness about depression, which impacts so many Americans.
