All three COVID-19 vaccines remain effective, study shows

Submitted by Division of Communications and Marketing

All three COVID-19 vaccines provide substantial protection against hospitalization, according to a recently published study. Kansas State University leaders continue to review the latest research during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The large collaborative study, led by Vanderbilt University Medical Center, appeared in the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report.

The researchers looked at all three COVID-19 vaccines — Pfizer, Moderna and Johnson & Johnson — that are approved and authorized in the U.S. The study compares the effectiveness of the vaccines in preventing COVID-19 hospitalizations among adults without immunocompromising conditions from March to August 2021.

According to the study, vaccine effectiveness against COVID-19 hospitalization was:

  • 93% for the two-dose Moderna vaccine.
  • 88% for the two-dose Pfizer vaccine.
  • 71% for the Johnson & Johnson vaccine.
