Submitted by Tresa Landis

The Manhattan branch of the American Association of University Women, or AAUW, invites you to join in the eighth annual celebration of International Women's Day the evening of Wednesday, March 8.

International Women's Day is observed annually on March 8. It is a global day recognizing and honoring the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women. The day also marks a call to action for accelerating women's equality. This year's theme is "Embrace Equity."

AAUW has assembled a panel of local international women to speak on their personal refugee experiences. Local branch member and State Sen. Usha Reddi will moderate the discussion.

This year's panel members are Antonina Broyaka, Lamya Abdullah Achelha, Maria Izquiderdo and Sediqa Nazari.

Broyaka is a K-State Extension associate in agricultural economics. She is a native of Ukraine who previously studied at K-State and was a Fulbright scholar. At the time of the Russian invasion, Broyaka was the dean of economics and entrepreneurship at Vinnytsia National Agrarian University of Ukraine.

Achelha is a K-State master's candidate in mass communications and a native of Morocco. Her research focuses on women's rights and feminism in the Middle East and North Africa area.

Izquiderdo is a Mexican-born K-State senior in nutrition and health and a student leader of the Hispanic American Leadership Organization, or HALO.

Nazari is a native of Afghanistan who immigrated here with assistance from the U.S. Army. She serves as an interpreter for Konza Prairie Community Health Center and plans to pursue a career in nursing.

The dinner begins at 6 p.m. at Holiday Inn at the Campus, 1641 Anderson Ave., and costs $25 per person. Reservations can be made by email to manhattanksaauw@gmail.com. The dinner reservation deadline is March 3. Payment can be made by cash or check at the door. No reservation is necessary to attend the public forum beginning at 7 p.m.

Come and bring a friend to this community celebration of women's achievement.
