Phishing attempts and vendor payment information requests

Submitted by Britt McLaughlin

Recent news of the ceasing of all operations for Silicon Valley Bank accounts may have an effect on vendors with which the university engages in business. This presents an opportunity for phishing scams. If a vendor contacts you requesting to update their banking information on file for electronic payment, the following steps should be taken:

  • Contact a direct company representative through a separate direct email or phone call to confirm the request is legitimate.
  • Once confirmed, provide the vendor with the authorization for electronic deposit form. The form is accessible to authorized users through the eForms platform.
  • Vendors must complete the form, provide a copy of a canceled check or certified bank letter showing account verification, and then submit it through the secure vendor upload portal.
  • Once submitted, the change will undergo a verification process, and then account information will be updated in the State of Kansas payment system, the processor for Kansas State University payments.

Report any phishing attempts to abuse@k-state.edu. Any questions regarding the electronic payment process may be directed to Robin Loader at robin@k-state.edu
