Chet Peters lecturer to address reimagining careers in student affairs
The 2023 Chester E. Peters Lecture will be presented by Margaret Sallee, associate professor of educational leadership and policy at the University at Buffalo.
Sallee will present "Building a Better Tomorrow: Reimagining Careers in Student Affairs" at 11:30 a.m. Friday, April 28, in Town Hall, 114 Staley School of Leadership. The event will be livestreamed for those unable to attend in person.
Sallee has authored two books, "Creating Sustainable Careers in Student Affairs" and "Faculty Fathers," in addition to writing numerous articles on topics related to her research areas of interest. She examines the ways in which institutional and national policies facilitate or hinder faculty, staff and student success in terms of their personal and professional lives.
She has grown increasingly concerned over the last decade about the proliferation of ideal worker norms in student affairs and the professoriate, suggesting that employees are working such long hours it is to the detriment of their personal lives.
Sallee's second line of inquiry focuses explicitly on low-income student-parents, and she recently received grants from the Spencer Foundation and the Jewish Foundation for Education of Women to fund further work in this area.
A California native, Sallee earned her doctorate in urban education with a focus in higher education and a graduate certificate in gender studies from the University of Southern California. She received her master's in higher education and student affairs from The Ohio State University and her bachelor's in English and French from the University of California, Berkeley.
The Chet Peters Lecture, sponsored by the department of special education, counseling and student affairs in the College of Education, is planned by the Higher Education Student Association.
