Gender-Affirming Care
At Lafene Health Center, we strive to provide gender-affirming care that is high-quality and evidence based, which is why we have partnered with the Gender-Affirming Medicine Clinic at The University of Kansas Health System in Kansas City for hormone therapy.
Appointments
- Consultation – Your first appointment is a 30-minute consultative appointment at Lafene. Your provider will focus on getting to know you and assessing your personal goals for your journey, including fertility preservation or surgical options.
- Initiation of Hormone Therapy – If you wish to proceed with hormone therapy, that will be initiated at Lafene or a referral will be sent to the University of Kansas Health System Gender-Affirming Medicine Clinic for a telehealth appointment. Lafene or the Gender-Affirming Medicine Clinic will determine what treatment and any workup that would be necessary. You may choose to have your labs done at Lafene and have prescriptions filled at our pharmacy whether you are under the care of Lafene or the Gender-Affirming Medicine Clinic.
- Follow-up Hormone Therapy – The follow up visits will be with your provider at Lafene. These will be 15-minute appointments to determine how you are doing and ensure that you are tolerating hormone therapy.
- Nurse Visit – This appointment is a 15-minute appointment with a nurse, in which the nurse can administer hormone injections or teach you how to self-administer hormone injections safely.

Costs
Every student on the Manhattan campus that pays the student services fee, each semester, is eligible for this service. This fee covers the cost of consultations and follow-up visits with a Lafene medical provider. If you decide to initiate treatment with The University of Kansas Health System Gender-Affirming Medicine Clinic, any visits you have there are not covered with that student services fee and will be billed through their clinic.
All other ancillary services such as labs and medications, do have a charge and may be billed to insurance. We will bill your insurance if your insurance provider has a U.S. address. We do not bill Medicaid or Medicare. You are responsible for any non-covered charges. If you have questions about charges for specific services, you may contact us by secure messaging the Billing Coordinator in the portal or by calling us during normal business hours at 785-532-6544.
