Study Abroad Opportunities
The Department of Modern Languages strongly encourages students to study abroad. Through the numerous programs available directly via our department and through the Office of Education Abroad, students can broaden their horizons, apply what they learn in the classroom, and expand their knowledge of culture and language, all while earning credits toward their degree.

This four week program takes place at International House language school in Playa del Carmen, Mexico. Students take courses taught by KSU and International House Spanish language faculty. Students will develop culturally appropriate oral and written communication skills in business-related professions. There will be specialized content and vocabulary, and experience for professional writing and translation. The program incorporates a service-learning compenent for students to further expand their Spanish language proficiency and interact with local Mayan communities.

Spanish 565 Spanish Civilization
This course develops critical understanding of the historical, political, social and cultural forces that have shaped the Spanish nation. It will offer a panoramic view of Spanish civilization, with emphasis on geography, history, art, and the contemporary reality of the country. During the course, which includes a 4.5 week Study Tour of Spain, we will discuss, observe, and analyze evidence of the historical and cultural evolution of Spain’s central and northern regions in small towns, urban centers, museums, and at architectural and historical landmarks.

Spanish 772 Spain Today
This course develops critical understanding of the historical, political, social and cultural forces that have shaped the Spanish nation (including the Spanish Civil War), and their role in contributing to contemporary Spanish society and culture. During the course, which includes a 4.5-week Study Tour in Spain, students will familiarize themselves with the main characteristics of contemporary Spanish culture, society, education, and family life, through active reflection on the geography, history, art, and contemporary realities they observe. Research projects will center on an aspect of “Spain Today” and will include academic articles and books, as well as critical observations of history, culture, and contemporary life collected while in small towns, urban centers, museums, and/or historical landmarks in Spain.

Spain Today: Madrid-Pamplona-el Norte Blog: The blog provides information about the program that is led by Dr. Rebecca Bender. Participants will stay in Madrid and Pamplona. As a part of the program, students will enroll in a class at the Universidad de Navarra while in Pamplona. KSU in Japan!

KSU in Japan is an interdisciplinary faculty-led program open to all KSU students and majors. The two-week study tour begins in Tokyo, the economic and technological center of the country. Here, students will visit Japanese technology companies before being whisked south to Fukuoka to visit additional companies and Kyushu university. Next, students will travel to Kyoto, where they will gain exposure to Japan's fascinating history, both recent and ancient. Throughout the program, students will have opportunities to engage locals, sample a variety of local cuisines, and reflect on and appreciate the many cultural differences that students will encounter.
Courses offered: CIS 118 Computer Science Professional Seminar (1 undergraduate credit), JAPAN 299 Introduction to Japanese Culture and Language (2-3 undergraduate credits)
