About the Developing Scholars Program

Mission and Goals

Mission

    • The mission of the Developing Scholars Program is to develop students who have first-generation student status, or who have identities which are historically underrepresented in higher education through mentored research projects with the intention of:
      • Increasing the recruitment of intellectually curious first-generation and/or historically underrepresented students
      • Improving retention of these students through excellent research, mentorship, and community-building opportunities
      • Guiding scholars toward graduate or professional school
      • Creating a 21st Century workforce which is diverse, highly talented, and seeks to improve their world

Goals

  • The goals of the Developing Scholars Program include:
    • Identify, recruit, motivate, and enable more first-gen and historically underrepresented students to obtain their bachelor’s degree
    • Encourage K-State faculty involvement in mentorship and undergraduate research
    • Improve academic success metrics and create opportunity for all students
    • Foster development of a community of student researchers by providing educational enrichment activities and ways for students to interact, network, socialize, and collaborate with each other and with the larger academic community
    • Nurture a strong work ethic, intellectual curiosity, community problem-solving, and enjoyment in the act of learning
    • Establish a "pathway of progress" to provide opportunities for such students to pursue diverse academic interests and to enter graduate programs, professional schools, or to find placement in their professional fields upon graduation
    • Regularly evaluate the impact and effectiveness of participation in the Developing Scholars Program for faculty and students
