2018 Scholars
December 21: Four students receive Gilman Scholarship for international study. Bailey Martin, senior Electrical Engineering, and Pranav Savanur, sophomore Pre-Med Biology, were awarded the Benjamin A. Gilman Scholarship for Spring 2019 and will study in the Czech Republic and United Kingdom respectively. Two more students were early decision awardees for Summer 2019. Annabelle Burtnett, sophomore Anthropology, and Kourtney Talkington, junior in Nutrition and Health, will study in Tanzania and Italy respectively.
December 14: Five students receive the Eisenhower Transportation Graduate Fellowships. Five K-State graduate students have been selected as Eisenhower Transportation Graduate Fellows for 2018-19. Jack Cunningham and Eliot Schrag in Civil Engineering and Rial Carver, Rachel Foss, and Andrew Young in Regional and Community Planning each will receive $5,000 in support of transportation-related research from the U.S. Department of Transportation.
December 12: Three K-Staters receive Phi Kappa Phi Love of Learning Award. Three K-State winners for the Phi Kappa Phi Love of Learning Award have been announce. Recipients include Kelly Briggs, Academic Advisor in the College of Education, and two recent alumni: Logan Britton, Agricultural Communications and Agricultural Economics, and Osler Ortez, Agronomy. These $500 awards support opportunities for continued education post-baccalaureate.
September 27:
Loan Tang selected as Gilman Alumni Ambassador. Loan Tang, senior in life science and pre-medicine, is serving as one of 24 Gilman Alumni Ambassadors across the United States for the 2018-2019 academic year. Loan is the first K-State student to be selected to serve as an official representative of the U.S. Department of State's Gilman International Scholarship Program.
July 10: Music composition graduate receives Phi Kappa Phi fellowship. Alex Wakim, May 2018 Bachelor of Music graduate, has earned a 2018 Phi Kappa Phi graduate fellowship. Wakim is receiving a $5,000 fellowship from the national collegiate honor society to study film music with a concentration in music theatre at New York University.
May 23: Student receives summer Gilman International Scholarship to help youth. Cheyanne Helms, junior in anthropology and pre-medicine, is the third Kansas State University student to be awarded a Gilman International Scholarship for Summer 2018. Helms will travel to the Dominican Republic as a volunteer for Deportes Para La Vida, a summer camp for youth development and part of the DREAM Project.
May 17:
Kansas State University student from Athol among 2018 Cargill Global Scholars. Jayden Meyer, sophomore in agricultural economics, is one of 10 U.S. students selected as a Cargill Global Scholar. The U.S. scholars join more than 60 scholars from Brazil, China, India, Indonesia and Russia. Meyer will receive annual scholarships for up to two years, attend a three-day leadership seminar with other U.S. scholars in Minneapolis in June, and attend Cargill's global leadership seminar with Cargill executives and scholars from around the world. In addition, a Cargill mentor will help him with his academic and professional goals.
May 10:
Nutrition, dietetics and sensory science master's student receives Fulbright Award. Alexander Fees, a master's degree student in nutrition, dietetics and sensory science, is Kansas State University's newest Fulbright U.S. Student Award recipient. Fees will travel to Budapest, Hungary, to research the cardiovascular abnormalities and deficits that occur with aging in coronary circulation, in conjunction with faculty at Semmelweis University.
April 19: Three students receive Goldwater honorable mentions. Reid Erdwien, junior in physics and math; Gabrielle Phillips, junior in chemical engineering; and Alexa Wilden, sophomore in microbiology and pre-medicine; have received honorable mentions for the 2018 Barry Goldwater Scholarship.
April 11: Kansas State University students, alumni receive National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowships. Adam Schieferecke, combined Bachelor of Science and Master of Science student in biology; Kyle Apley, senior in chemistry; Benjamin Archibeque, senior in physics and psychology; and Priscila Guzman, doctoral student in biology; have been recognized as National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellows. Hannah Wilborn, senior in industrial engineering, and Nelson Walker, doctoral student in statistics, received honorable mentions. Two K-State alumni were also recognized. Muriel Eaton, a 2017 bachelor's degree graduate in biochemistry, received a fellowship and Michael Vega, a 2016 bachelor's degree graduate in geology and chemistry, received an honorable mention.
March 15:
Two Kansas State University students receive Gilman International Scholarship. Two K-State students have received the Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship to study abroad in Summer 2018. Thomas Meek, sophomore in personal financial planning, will take Spanish language classes with the Universidad Nacional de Coasta Rica, in Heredia, Costa Rica. Crystal Miller, senior in family science and human development, will volunteer for humanitarian aid work and teach English classes in Bangalore, India.
February 21:
Gates Cambridge selects first Kansas State University student for international scholarship. Vaithish Velazhahan, senior in microbiology, medical biochemistry and pre-medicine, is receiving the 2018 Gates Cambridge Scholarship. Velazhahan is one of 35 U.S. students to receive the 2018 scholarship established by Bill and Melinda Gates. Velazhahan will study with the MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology, or LMB, at Cambridge where he will research the structure of key membrane proteins, called G protein-coupled receptors, that help cells communicate with an organism's environment.
January 18: Two APDesign students receive prestigious Dwight David Eisenhower Transportation Graduate Fellowship. Two APDesign students, Andrew Young and Rachel Foss, received the Dwight D. Eisenhower Transportation Fellowship for 2018. Both students are studying regional and community planning.
